We have a hunting cabin way out in the middle of nowhere. No one has used it in a long time but... that is changing now that the kids are older. We can use it as base camp for hiking, biking, or hunting so... my BIL and I decided to go assess the effort.

Basically - its a small place without much ventilation and there is a mess of rodent E36 M3 all over the place. Like... a lot. My dogs killed 3 mice in the first 5 minutes of being let loose. I dropped about 5lbs of Tomcat when we left, That will get rid of the E36 M3ters - but how do you get rid of the E36 M3?

My first inclination was to use the shopvac (we have a generator) but my BIL said "we probably don't want to be breathing E36 M3 dust" which when put like that makes a bit of sense. The broom kicks up a lot too because the place was abandoned for a long time. It is filthy.

Do I wear a respirator? Cover mouth with a wet rag? Kick a pail of bleach over and broom it around? Burn it down and start over from scratch?

My brother and i did exactly the same thing you are doing. We put on respirators and full tyvek suits while we were vacuuming. Then we dusted, wiped and mopped. When we stepped out of our cabin we hosed ourselves off and threw away the suits.

Shop vac. You can get a HEPA filter for them. I'd still wear a respirator and at least gloves. If there isn't any running water I'd probably go for the paper suits with taped sleeves and ankles just so I wouldn't have to ride home covered in rat E36 M3.

Wear gloves and a P100 respirator and gloves. Wet it all down and mop/sweep it up. Replace any carpets. Once everything is cleaned up, use bleach to disinfect the house.

Some info on Hantavirus.

You could also get a second hose for your shop vac and vent the "output" to the outside. That would help cut down on the amount of aerosolized E36 M3 in the interior air. But still wear a respirator.

Consider sealing up the place before cleaning it up. Otherwise next weekend when you go up to use it, they will be back. You may have killed a bunch with the poison but others will be in and out too.

We have a cabin with no running water or electricity. Before we built a new cabin, I heard something in the walls early one morning that woke me up. I opened my eyes and saw a red squirrel looking at me. That was the fastest I've ever got out of the top of those old bunk beds.

Our old cabin also had the metal sheeting around the outside to keep animals out. Yeah right! It gave the porcupines a place to live for the last 60 years. The biggest one we pulled out of there was held by his back foot by my 6' 2" father, at my dad's belt line, and the nose was still touching the ground. The smell was terrible. Even after ripping out the walls of their 'ground floor' condo, it still stunk.

We used that old cabin long enough to order a truck load of building supplies to build a new cabin.

Wear a respirator and sweep or vacuum it clean. Then mop the place with some sort of methyl ethyl bad E36 M3. Fix all of the holes that you can find. When you leave put out at least one bucket trap.
