The same people who despise Comic Sans also seem to hate Arial. My response is that it comes with the computer and they are welcome to change the font on anything I send them.
Arial is a pretty crappy copy of Helvetica, but if you don't have Helvetica (most people don't) or can't see the difference (most people can't) it gets the job done.
I'm not a Comic Sans hater -- there's a time and a place for every typeface.

To move back away from the automotive theme, the night-time "halation" effect discussed in the article is why, I think, it's hard to read white text on a black computer screen. (No, I don't buy the white-on-black yields the best contrast and therefore readability argument.)
