In March-April-May almost all the hospitals I saw had tents outside where everyone had to be screened before entry. There was a 'shut-down' and we were 'flattening the curve'. There was a scary new deadly disease and we were going to 'stop the spread'. It was assumed that people who had it were found and isolated.
By the end of Summer it was everywhere. Hospitals I saw had a screener indoors who would take temperatures and determine if you had a legitimate reason to be in the hospital. We heard of plenty of people who had had it and didn't even know they were 'sick' (to me this pretty much invalidated most of the screenings). By then I worked from the assumption that EVERYBODY had it. I still think that the majority of masks *as used by* the general public are little more than a symbol of caring and compliance.
