I know I'm behind the times of keeping up with current things, but when the hell did Craigslist start charging to list a car for sale?!?!?

I know it's only $5, but damn!

Looks like 2019.

It's not terrible, Facebook Marketplace seems to be used more anyways.

$5 only for cars. Selling car parts us still free.

It cuts down the BS listings. It a good value to sell something $500 to $50,000 for only $5

Where it gets annoying is you need to pay every time your bring your ad back to the top.

I'd actually say that it hurts cl car searches, because it's all BHPH dealers posting their cars. I hardly ever see a private sale on there now. Everything is listed with the down payment as the price.

I've got my motorhome listed on C'list right now.  It's generating a lot of interested leads / texts/calls.  It'll probably sell at tomorrow night's appointment.  48 hours after listing it.  $5 well spent indeed.  I HATE the Book of Faces and refuse to assimilate.

Sorry I know $5 is a petty bitch complaint. Think I'm finally gettin old enough where I see something that says $5 for this, and my brain goes to 20 years ago $5 was 2 gallons of gas, loaf of bread and dozen eggs that got me thru the week..

I'm in my late f0rties too.  I remember pre internet selling a car.  You'd have to pay for a three line advertisement in the local news paper.  I forget how much it was, but probably more than $5.

Ahh.  Thats why people put $17 for a $17,000 vehicle.  Time to start flagging posts

Hell $5 was all that a year ago, let alone 20.

$2.90 in gas, .89 for bread 1.19 for eggs

It was pretty much the end of CL for me for anything automotive related.  Yes I agree there was a crapton of god aweful scam posts to wade through when it was free.  But the paywall removed them and sadly removed all the things this community usually looks for (cheap crappy cars not worth $5 to list)

I paid the fee once to list some fairly marketable vehicles when I was moving.  Not a dang response worth my $5.  So yeah, its kinda dead to me.  Marketplace is a cesspool as well but its currently the cesspool in which the market is swimming so if you are hunting its your hunting ground.

The thing I hate about FB is that you can't filter out dealers. Well, that's ONE of the things I hate...

Agree.

I attribute one of the factors driving up used car prices is the popularity of FB.  With no way to filter off the dealer listings, the only way to shop for a cheap car is to be forced to view dealer ads and their crazy high prices  As a shopper this then leads you to "believe" these are real prices.

As a seller, you can price yourself right up there with the dealers.

I report listings that have the down payment listed as the price. If the seller is going to use that tactic I'm going to treat them like it's Reddit, and since there's no downvote, report it is!

Marketplace is indeed a cesspool but...

When I sold the avalanche I paid the 5 clams and listed it on CL because berk fb.

I got 16 lowball offers and 25+ scam bait emails. After a week I gave up.

I listed it on marketplace and had almost 40 interested buyers in the first hour. It sold that night at full price (higher than I had listed it on CL)

It's a E36 M3hole, but it is a damn effective one.

I had the opposite experience. Few weeks on fb on open marketplace and some specific groups. Some positive comments but no real interest. Put it on cl and it was sold within a week for as much or more than I was expecting to get for it. Best $5 I've ever spent. Realistically on either place a lot of it is luck and chance.

My strategy for weeding out the low ballers and spam bots is to only give my phone number in a "coded" format.  For instance: area code 317 would be typed out : tree 0ne siven.  It requires a few brain cells to decipher and has slowed down the B.S.  I never respond to emails, but clearly state that in my advertisement.

I have not sold a car in years. I use them up to the point that they are a smoking pile of junk.

Was there a thread on the rest of your trip? I also want to hear how you do on the buy/sell overall costs. I've always thought that would be the way to do it (any vacation stuff really, pontoon boat, RV, jet skis, etc)  but I haven't yet had the stones to give it a try.

I sold a car on CL a couple summers ago and walked away feeling like the $5 was very well spent. Maybe better than when sales were 'free'. Haven't tried recently though.
