I am planning a 1000 mile trip in a Volvo 240 Wagon that I am purchasing for significantly less than LeMons budget. Failure is likely, and I would like to be prepared the inevitable. I will have a small toolbox and extra fluids. I have used zip ties, fire extinguishers, and speaker wire to keep previous beaters going a few more miles. Other than the previously mentioned supplies and a roll of duct tape, what else would you pack in your "beater box"?

Gas can and jumper cables...assuming you don't already have them. I keep telling myself I should get a fire extinguisher, but I feel that if a fire breaks out...WTF, let it burn.

I have toyed with the idea of a similar roadtrip for months (YEARS?). then I tell myself, my DD is a borderline crapcan car and it's my DESTINATION(S) that are keeping me from really pushing the envelope...so to speak. I mainly drive local except for the few times a year I take a 1100 mile trip to see the folks. The closest I'm getting to what you are planning is to take NON interstate routes whenever possible. I recently drove rte 17 along the Fl. Ga. and SC coast....aside from Charlotte, there was either nothing or endless strip malls.

Knowing the car you're talking about, some vacuum caps and vacuum hose would be a good move too. Though I'll be sure to have some on hand when you're in town. :-)

If you can think of anything that I can swipe at Pull-a-Part before I leave TN, let me know. They have 3 240s and one just arrived.....they also have an 850 if you need anything for yours.

Things that haven't been mentioned: Hose clamps, spare cotter pins, loctite, radiator leak plug kit, JB Weld can be useful in a pinch.

I really don't know of anything off hand, but I haven't spent too much time with the car. I've also never owned a 240 so don't know their trouble spots. I'm doing okay on 850 parts, sadly enough they are a common sight in the junkyard nowadays.

I'll try to drop by my friend's place this week and look over the 240 again, with an eye for the trip. It seemed pretty solid other than some open vacuum ports. And, at this point, a dead battery.
