Radio commercial this morning:
"C'mon down to So & So's Stealership for the largest selection of SUVs and CUVs".
Nothing sporty about a Sport Utility Vehicle.
Car like Utility Vehicle?
Cargo Utility Vehicle.
I can't think of any C words.

Cute Utility Vehicle, "cute ute"
Or possibly compact?
Edit: Just googled it, Crossover Utility Vehicle.
I agree on the car base.
The original SUV's were truck frame based and typically, Sport, implied some sort of off-road capability. As the vehicles got softer and build to meet their real use which is going to the mall, the term Crossover was born.
"CUV": Shell-game jargon to draw in those who want an SUV but don't want to be associated with owning a "gas-guzzling SUV"...

aka, Minivans, and Minivans For People Who Are Slightly Less Ashamed To Drive A Minivan.
pretty sure its supposed to mean Compact Utility Vehicle. i guess they didn't like compact suv, so just shortened it. i've heard of the "gas guzzling" ones referred to full-size and mid-size SUVs, following in the nomenclature of cars

I see it the other way, it's jargon to sell station wagons to people who want SUVs but can't admit that all they really need is a station wagon, so they call it a crossover instead and make it a little taller.

The problem with that is - I love station wagons. I hate crossovers. I want a wagon, damnit, not some tall, mostly useless wannabe off-road posuer kludge...
But if I had kids I'd buy a minivan... so I'm not the target market for these... things...

Exactly. They're not marketed at people who buy the vehicles that makes sense, they;re marketed at people who want to be able to pretend that by not having a dreaded "Station Wagon" of "Minivan" they're somehow cooler.
Now there's the occasional intersection of need that would make these things a good choice, but that's not why they exists, nor what the marketing targets.
Me, while I don't own one currently I'm a big fan of both station wagons and minivans, and once the car/truck count gets from four down to two around here there's a good chance that car #3 will be one of those two options. But if I brought home a fifth car/minivan right now I might as well bring home divorce papers along with it.
In reply to Ian F:
The lines have blurred so much, the marketing terms are pretty worthless. A Venza is a station wagon marketed as a crossover. An Accord Crosstour is a hatchback marketed as a crossover. Crossover is just the term in vogue for station wagons. They come in trucky and wagony flavors, whichever you prefer.

While fuzzy and getting fuzzier, I think of the min SUVs as the crossovers (as they were the first that name got applied to as far as I'm aware) and the others as clever ways to get station wagons and such to market without people noticing so that those of us who do want's station wagons have more options.
