Released 50 years ago.
*sigh*
And Rogers Waters is now claiming it was all him, and he's re-recording it.
"I wrote The Dark Side Of The Moon. Let's get rid of all this 'we' crap! Of course, we were a band, there were four of us, we all contributed – but it's my project and I wrote it. So... blah!”
What a giant douche.
Pink Floyd wasn't as good without him. But Waters was NOTHING without them.
In reply to Duke :
Yeah, I really don't understand the ego on Roger. I also can't imagine sharing a stage with the other members and then coming away with "you know, actually, I'm the biggest deal in this band". A lot of bands don't do so well with changing eras of music, like they have a hot five or eight years and they can't shift with changing tastes very well. So it's hard for me to say how well PF would have done without all of Roger's dramatics. But I'd like to have seen what they could have accomplished without his nonsense. It's also strange to me how he wants to get all this credit yet kicked out guys like Richard Wright for "not pulling his weight". That's what he's saying about everyone else anyway so what's the difference?
In reply to Duke :
I was going to politely disagree. I saw Waters live about 18 years ago, even did Dark side in its entirety.
But looking back, I don't know if it was him that was great or the acid we had before the show that made it great.
Roger is a complete ass. But unfortunately being an ass often goes hand in hand with greatness. With the rest of Pink Floyd not touring as PF, at least Roger occasionally tours with The Wall, so (unfortunately) I'll keep throwing my hard earner at him to get as close as I can to the real thing.

Having seen him twice (with you!), I think I'm done with him. He's just a giant shiny happy person.
BUT, there's no questioning his talent. And further, I'd dispute the idea that he was nothing without Pink Floyd. His first three solo albums (Pros and Cons, KAOS, and Amused to Death) are pretty damn good. Not as good as peak Floyd, but still pretty amazing in their own right. Hell, the last album he did with them (Final Cut) was pretty much a Roger solo album that Nick and Dave played on, and I love that one, too.
Still, the run that Floyd went on from Meddle to The Wall is unmatched in rock history, IMO.

Except that Gilmour had to play some of the bass parts on Dark Side because Waters's skill level wasn't up to it.
And live, it would be the backing band that sounded good. You can hire damn good musicians who can play anything you want them to.
What you can't hire is bandmates who can create that music in the first place.

I'm not a fan at all of either Pros and Cons or KAOS,and I've never heard Amused To Death.
I was tired of The Wall by 1990, even though it sold a bazillion copies and you still hear cuts on the radio. Too much Roger Waters And The Three Stooges and not enough Pink Floyd.
In reply to Duke :
What are you thinking of then as "the definative PF album" to show what you think the band is about if not The Wall? I'm not saying The Wall is their best or most whatever album, I'm just curious.
=~ ) I was making lunch one day on patrol, we were following subs from another nation for a while. I put on the Pink Floyd Meddle album and Echoes came on.....
HOLY CARP!!! Doors bust open, big eyes all around and WTFs?
Sorry Officers.
Dark Side of the Moon is one of those albums that, if you ask 10 people what their favorite track is from the album, you'll get 10 different answers.
I still remember the first time listening to the LP, on my turntable and Dyna Co tube amp. The notes about leaped out of the speakers.
Back when Dark Side of the Moon was released I knew some guys who painted a huge replica of the album cover on the wall of their apartment. I don't think they got their damage deposit back when they moved out.
So.... assuming Waters is a massive a-hole (which there seems to be a lot of evidence of). That means we should not listen to Pink Floyd anymore, right?

Nah, he's the right kind of massive a-hole.

Agree
I had no idea of the timing but heard a song from Dark side on my way home from work last week and thought, I need to listen to more PF from that era. Being away from it for so long, when I hear it now I have a new appreciation of just how really, really good it is. And the many fond smoke filled memories don't hurt either.
I also recall schooling my kids on 70's music when they were young and telling them that I thought PF was the one band that could do no wrong. When a new album came out, it wasn't a matter of whether it was going to be good, but just how good it was going to be.
Waters is definitely a d-bag and the last tour I saw him on he couldnt carry his own weight anymore. He had better singers and guitarists holding things up while he stood there and took the credit. Final straw for me was some new song he pulled out for the tour which was essentially "if I was god I could have done it better"
Love PF, seen shows with and without Waters and it was always great but Im a bit over him at this point.
In reply to 914Driver :
Having listened to that song recently I can confirm that it would indeed cause concern from the sonar division if one happened to be “following subs from another nation.” LOL
I don't have a dog in the "waters vs the world" fight, but all of those albums are formidable and as duke said they can cause burn out. I make a point of rediscovering them every six months or so. I wish I had seen them live but the laser light show that comes around is pretty wild also.
edit: Nick Mason bought his 250 GTO with the first royalty check from DSotM.
10+ years ago when I was doing a lot of business airplane travel, a staple of my MP3 player was the album, Wish You Were Here. Restful with a set of earbuds.
As for the Waters debate and who did what, I agree with the sentiment of...
The band is just fantastic, that is really what I think
Oh, by the way, which one's pink?
The Wall was great when I discovered it at ~14. As an (pseudo) adult, not so much.
Dark Side is of course epic. Although personally I'd rank Live at Pompeii right up there too. That rendition of Echos is epic & Careful With That Axe Eugene is haunting.
