Heard earlier this evening. I remember all the hullabaloo with Hoffman over his "vert record". I also remember his first X-games, and he seemed to come out of nowhere. He polarized guys my age in the sport, but his talent was undeniable.
I have never heard of Dave Mirra until his rally career.
I remember Hoffman when he was 15 in the Skyway ads as their new member. And when he did the world's first 900.

I posted about this on FB and an acquaintance of mine called him a POS for leaving 2 kids behind. I tried to explain that no mentally sound person commits suicide, that there had to have been something going on, but apparently that is too much for a person to fathom by the conversation that ensued.
Either way it's a tragedy and I feel bad for his family. Mental health is a thing to take seriously.

not to derail, but here is a cool documentary (its on Netflix) - 30 for 30: The Birth of Big Air
https://youtu.be/m28nJEevCZw
Focuses on Hoffman, talks to the scruffle between Mirra and Mat over "the record", and looks at the BMX vert sport pretty closely. Lots of cool stories and bios

Wasn't until today that I learned he was born in Chittenango, NY, which is not too far from where I live.

Wow - so sad that such a talent was so sad that it lead to an end like this. As a BMX'r he was one of the guys coming up at the same time as me in the sport. Sad times folks.
