The negotiation whiz guys always say to be sure you're dealing with a person who has the authority to make the decisions at hand. I'm never going to buy a car from a dealership again (probably)...but if I do, or if I help a friend and they do that, "let me run this past my sales manager," schtuff, I'll say:
"Thanks, but I need to be dealing directly with the person that has the authority to negotiate this deal with me. If that is not you, I'd like to now be dealing with whoever that person is. Is that OK or should I leave now?"
