Finally have a phone I don't hate (Samsung Galaxy S II) and a car I really don't hate (WRX).
We did, however, take a base model with no nav. Which I'm fine with, as the phone does that sort of thing quite well.
BUT... The last time I bought a phone holder off Amazon, it took up half the windshield and flopped around.
Anybody got any advice, either in general or for this phone and/or car?
I get the vehicle specific mounts and then pair it with the appropriate phone holder. You may want to get a phone holder that rotates, assuming you'll want a horizontal view for the nav portion.
Crutchfield is where I start to track down the vehicle mount, then amazon for the holder.
Holy E36 M3!
$50 for the car mount, comprised of a piece of sheet with a plastic ball on it!?
And that's before getting the phone holder.
I don't know whether I can do that. I wonder what a replacement vent unit is, so I can restore the car to "perfection" after the HVAC-vent phone mount scratches the original...
EDIT: But thanks for the info! I didn't even know there were car-specific mounts...

Check out RAM mounts. Not especially cheap but I think they're the best. http://www.ram-mount.com/Products/CellPhoneMounts/tabid/142/Default.aspx#/
+1 for RAM mounts - I use one for my Garmin nav both on the bikes and in the car.
The last car-specific mount I bought was from Crutchfield. It has worked great.
The generic ones I have I use for the 924 and the CSX. They aren't as nice, but I was able to engineericate something that isn't too unpleasant to deal with.

Another vote for RAM Mounts. Is it more expensive? yes. Is their customer service top notch? Yup.
Have a Garming Nuvi RAM mounted on my motorcycle. Most solid piece of mounting i have ever seen.
Love it and recommend it to everyone for anything

I am beginning to grok that this may be something worth paying for if this many people feel this strongly about it.
That being said, I'm still thinking $50-80 is a berkeleying giant expenditure for the device in question. I also think that if I have to talk to customer service to get my phone held within reach in my car, somebody's doing something wrong...
Grumble grumble...

As a cheap solution I have had this in my Volvo 850, Ford Escape and BMW e30. I think I recently saw the same again at O'reilys Auto Parts.
Here is a Subaru review about it.

Really simple but has served me since 2007 and in that 4 years has likely held 12 different handsets or more. Holds as portrait mode only and does not open wide enough or turn for landscape mode.
Note: not big enough(wide enough) for a GPS unit (which are typically landscape)
Not only do the hands widen as shown for various width but the fingers also adjust for various thickness (not shown)

I pulled a Picture of a WRX center stack and my guess is that what I posted above will not work for you. The big tabs on the vets to adjust air are likely too big and in the way.
In addition, my cars have been vent over radio not vent under radio like you have. If the device could be attached to the vent, the handset would extend over the radio and obscure visibility and access to the radio.
Customer service was only cause i ordered the wrong cradle and had to return it and get a different one. Very helpful and actually knew the problem before i was even done talking about how i ordered it wrong.
Ill be buying from them again is how ill end this post haha
I got a Wally World "general purpose holder thing" that clips to an air vent. It actually works really well. I can't think of what brand it is though.

Get the phone holder I have....it's called a pocket. If you HAVE to talk while in the car, pull over, pull it out of your pocket and there you go.

^^For the GPS feature, though...
I like the RAM mount 'cos it looks like a badass robot arm sprouting from your dash.

I have one of these, it comes with an iPhone specific mount as well as a universal mount.

I use it to hold my phone at track days for GPS lap timing.

As Luke observed, this is for the GPS/Nav functionality. I don't want to futz with my phone or talk or text while I'm driving, but I'd like to be able to have the Nav screen visible.
I got a mount for my T-bolt from Arkon. Good product and great customer service -- had a small issue with a part starting to crack -- they sent a replacement out quickly. They have mounts out there for practically any device and any way you want to mount the thing to your car/bike/whatever.
I currently use an Arkon mount as well, the slim grip deluxe.

I really like it, have had it probably 9 months. I went through a ton of junk mounts before I found this one. I dislike that all mounts seem to be made of plastic. Something that is structural and sits in the sun and the heat of a parked car should not be plastic IMHO. Thermaltake (the computer case manufacturer) makes a really nice looking all aluminum mount but its not available outside of Asia or the UK as far as I could tell, and the cost of importing one was astronomical.
The RAM mounts do look nice also.
I will be looking into these as I use my phone as a radio too..
