Earlier this evening, I was across the street with the neighbors watching the crane pick up the debris. It's the high point of a hurricane.
An SUV came to a short stop a few houses away from us to let some squirrels cross the street.
Then I saw a dog sprint away from the SUV.
"Did she just hit a dog!?"
The driver jumped out of the SUV and chased the dog around the SUV. The dog then jumped back into the SUV.
We think we just saw a dog jump/fall out of an SUV that had just come to a stop.
Somewhere in here there's a lesson about properly securing dogs in a moving vehicle.

Maybe the dog bailed on purpose to chase the squirrels?
I once saw a dog fall out of the back of a pickup, when the driver made a sudden turn. Fortunately the dog appeared to only have minor injuries but it was shocking to see, and reinforced the idea that letting your dog ride back there is a bad idea.
BTDT.
I used to have a lab/mutt that would jump out of the vehicle every time he saw something interesting. Speed didn't matter, he would bail at 30 mph to chase a dog, child, squirrel, or whatever caught his eye. If he had a leash on, it had to be a short one, otherwise, he would bail and hang himself on the leash.
He was, by far, the dumbest animal I've ever seen.
Way back when, my friend had a bulldog. Said bulldog was top heavy. They learned quick to not roll windows down in the car, or hold onto him.
The pup still inadvertently fell out about 3 times in his life.....
Good chance the dog jumped out- my FIL had their dog jump out once. Not sure why, but poor Brownie ended up sitting in the back with the windows down after that.

I've met some people like that.
Ours wears a harness in the car. Not that she tries to get out, but figure it keeps her in place in case something bad happens.
My first contract west of ft. Worth, I saw a bunch of flatbed trucks, at speed, with blue healers riding on them. Mostly perched as far in the left rear corner - for some reason. Happy dogs!
from the O. P. 's description, I'm not sure how anybody doesn't assume the dog intentionally jumped out to chase squirrels.
May not be what it was, but looks obvious to me.
My calm, well-behaved dog goes absolutely ape-E36 M3 if she sees a squirrel or if you say "squirrel." She once jumped out of my neighbor's car at a near stop one day when my neighbor was bringing her back from a visit with her dogs. I have no doubt the above situation was a dog going after a squirrel.
My uncle was building a house a bunch of years ago. He was pitching scrap out of a window into a trailer when his Boykin Spaniel decided he should fetch and jumped out of a 2nd-floor window after a piece of 2x4.
He later had a Blue Heeler that was glued to the truck. Speeds under 20, he stood on the roof. Speeds over 20 but under 50 he was on the truck box/fuel tank. At 50 plus he would drop into the bed or crawl through the back window and jump in the front seat. Even when the truck stopped the dog stayed in the truck unless called.

When I was a child, my dog fell out of the bed of an F-150 while leaning over the side for a better sniff of air. Luckily, I was also in the bed of the truck and managed to grab part of her and scream for my dad to stop before we both went over.

Bulldogs can be pretty dumb. A friend of mine had one that would walk into the inground pool and, not swim, walk along the bottom of the pool.......

Thank you David. I really don't enjoy having to try to put them back together afterwards, or telling the family that there's nothing I can do.

My new Border Collie pup almost got a squirrel yesterday. The squirrels in my backyard were used to my slow, older dogs. The didn't see her coming.
In reply to Snowdoggie (Forum Supporter) :
We had a Border Collie on the farm that was completely spastic. It would try to herd anything. Cows, people, kids, tractors, grains of sand. That stupid dog chewed on a dump truck tire until it exploded in her face. After biting a couple of kids we gave her to a couple without kids. They ended up putting her down after she bit the postman. The Collie, a couple of Dobermans, and the Boykin Spaniel are the reason I swore off ever getting a full-breed dog. Too many of them are broken mentally and physically.

My last one tried to herd the huskies in the backyard. The huskies thought he was playing and would play back. I entered him in frisbee competitions and actually took him out to the country for sheepherding lessons. He would herd pit bulls at the dog park. Never bit anybody. Actually was friendly to other people which was unusual for a Border Collie. I missed him so I found another one. She stopped chewing on everything in the house when I started buying kong toys and leaving them in her crate. A kong filled with peanut butter will keep her busy for hours. I don't have kids but Mrs. Snowdoggie grew up with Aussies and Border Collies. She likes having them around.
