I carry a knife, phone, BT headset, keys and a money clip. Occasionally I need something else too - like a water bottle or a couple Cliff bars. Maybe even a charger of some sort.
It has been brought to my attention that cargo shorts are not really appropriate attire for every occasion (much to my chagrin). In the winter I use a sport coat for pocket space when real pants are required.
What options do I have here aside from inventing a cargo short with the pockets on the inside?
You could get something to clip on your belt that holds the phone and BT headset, that may free up some pocket space. If you get a bag, go for a messenger bag. Less murse-like. And at all costs, avoid fanny packs and things that say they're "european leather."

I would look odd at dinner with the family, no?
Small backpack? Maybe that's overkill.
If you do get a fanny pack, make sure you wear it in front under your beer belly.

Yes you would. What does that have to do with a briefcase?
A satchel? Like Indiana Jones?
Honestly, in today's society it's ok for a guy to have a handbag.
However, I find the term "Murse" offensive, so call it a satchel.
There are some good ones out there.

Maybe see if there's a keychain knife that can replace the one you carry separately, to cut down the volume and number of things you carry.
Personally I tell fashion to go berkeley itself and wear cargo shorts or pants to anything short of a formal function.
It's a European shoulder bag!
Some of my (rugby) teammates are into fanny packs...
but that involves about as much 'not caring what people think' as a murse.

This is heresy! The Benchmade Barrage is possibly the most useful thing on my person. A keychain knife? Sweet jebus! I'd sooner carry a vinyl hello kitty purse!

I'm with you ... but the blurry line of what constitutes "formal" differs betwixt myself and the mrs. For instance... a funeral is just black cargo shorts in my mind but in hers, not so much.
The fanny pack is really just for those with conceiled carry issues.
It might be to deal with people mocking the fanny pack....
You people seem to think it's ok for a grown man to wear shorts too.

Look up Swiss-Tech Utili-Key .
I have had mine for years and would order another same day if i lost it.

It isn't? It's rare to find me wearing anything other than shorts outside of the work environment.
Pants suck.
If a messenger bag is too big, you might consider a tactical man purse. Maxpedition offers several designs that sound like they would be perfect for what you want to carry. They are only available in manly colors too.

I carried a shoulder bag over 35 years ago. I'm not sure if it was cool or not, but I was a Theatre major, so I guess that tells you something.
I now carry a backpack. It's my entire office.
For you, a giant purple fanny whacker packer!

I hear you... what I really need is a Cargo Kilt. Even with shorts it's far too much effort to drop trow or scratch the yam bag.

I'm not one to judge, but it seems like a valet or personal assistant would be more appropriate to carry your stuff around than a murse.
I carry a cooler. It's handy to keep my lunch and drinks in but the zipper front partion of it is totally my purse. Charger, chap stick, and various non-pocket items live in there.

Hmm what's that thing at the back of the handle? Looks like a keychain hole

This is brilliant! I could call her an "Interpreter" so it didn't seem quite so posh.
