I have fond memories of a story that Car & Driver ran back in the 1980's about a triple threat Trans Am or Firebird built by Keith Black. The idea was to make a car capable of top speed runs, track cornering, and drag racing. I vividly recall it being a blue 4th gen, but everything I can find clearly shows a Camaro. Maybe there was a second car built later, or maybe I am just showing my age. Either way, one of my all-time favorite articles, I still want a 1985 Corvette with an air dam and twin turbos.
Thanks for the article link, that was a good read!
Callaway Youtube channel has a sort of documentary they made about attending this event along with a ton of other amazing stuff.
I believe your thinking of the gale banks firebird

I love the old pictures and videos about tuners and racing from this era. That Callaway video was amazing, and the documentary on the 1986 Silver State Classic is one of my favorites.

I remember that car. I spent many hours reading and re-reading the article and trying to figure out a way of doing it on the cheap.
Are you sure your not thinking about K.I.T.T.?

I was always enamored with the first car to break 300mph.
Stock-ish body (added afront lip and a spoiler swap)
If you want to see a similar car take a look at the Big Red Camaro videos that I believe are on the Prime channel.
Big Red is a first generation Camaro, but yeah it is an impressive car.
The link really reminded me how much I miss the car magazine articles of my youth!

At that point there was very little Camaro left.
