I just don't see any correlation at all between this incident and our right to bare arms. And the constitution certainly doesn't demand that we are all armed. I mean I'm not armed right now.

Well, this is what they look like for the last 2 weeks around here. It looks more like an occupying army than the search for a lone gunman.

Well, from what I've read so far about that guy, I don't blame them for being dressed like that. Proper attire for the task at hand. There's every indication he'll go down shooting. However, I've seen local cops in other areas that look like that while directing traffic.

Here is a straight take on the situation for Lancer since he won't let me pick on Canadians or get sidetracked about the second amendment

Datsun1500 wrote: There's no way you can watch that video and think that kid did anything wrong. Good thing there was a camera.

I think it's about time for every officer to have a body camera on at all times when on duty. I bet that if twitchy Mctriggerfinger here would have had one for the last couple years there would have been plenty of evidence that he was a danger to the public long before he shot this guy. At a bare minimum his supervisors could have reviewed his previous stops and taught him how to preform a traffic stop.

He set himself up from the beginning to not have control over the situation. The guy was already out of the car, standing by the drivers seat, when he rolled up. The first words out of his mouth were show me your drivers license. If he would have asked the guy to step over in front of the cruiser, it would have done a couple things that would have created a much safer situation for everybody. It would have created space so that if the guy did have a weapon in the vehicle or had intentions of jumping back in to run the officer would have had more time to better judge the quickly developing situation. Also he would have seen the guy patting his pockets for his wallet and more than likely in that situation the guy would have told the cop that it was in the car instead of just leaning back in to get the wallet off of the console.

I see it as a serious breakdown in supervision and training. In my opinion he deserved to be fired for performing a stop in that manner after being an LEO for so long, I wonder about his training. He deserves to spend some time in jail for shooting this guy. And the guy that got shot needs to be PAID.

Also I'm pretty impressed that the guy had the presence of mind to stop and put his hands up. I'm not sure I wouldn't have bolted and kept running as far and as fast as I could.

Wow.

I'm seated firmly in the tell-the-officer-what-I'm-going-to-do-before-I-do-it camp but that response was completely wrong.

In every profession there are those who excel at the job and those who shouldn't even have the job. This jackass obviously falls into the latter category.

I always think it's funny when they start throwing the civilian word around. Civil officer=Civilian.

It's really sad that our society makes excuses for these guy when they screw up like this. Putting on the badge is accepting the fact that you're the good guy and might get hurt because you're doing the right thing.

I'm not a civilian, and we had to get shot at before we were allowed to return fire...in a war zone.

It's already been said that cops have to make spit second decisions and I agree with that. It's a tough job. There have also been a fair number of comments about how to act when you are stopped by the cops. Some of you seem to have a system down pat and that's something that I've never really given a lot of thought to. I don't have much interaction with the police but I was stopped for speeding about two years ago. When I review my actions I'm glad I wasn't shot. As the cop walked up I was madly digging in my glovebox for my registration and insurance card. I then proceeded to drop my wallet while trying to get my license out and had to feel around under my seat to find it. All this time the cop stood beside my window with a bemused smile on her face. This all took place on a two lane county road with no witnesses. My point is the police are there to protect and serve. They are the one with the training. They are the one who are supposed to know how to react when pulling you over. Most civilians will be stressed or at least flustered when stopped by the police. It isn't up to the public to be careful how we act around the police it's supposed to be the other way around.

As a side note my speeding ticket was deserved and the cop was decent enough to reduce it so that I didn't lose any points on my license.

I only got pulled over once for speeding, I stopped & shut down the car, rolled down the window and had my hands in my lap. Cop asked if I had my license, I said "Yes I do" and slowly went into the glove box. He unlatched his holster and put his hand on his gun at that point, so I just slowed down some more and got my wallet.

Turns out they thought I had just come from an armed robbery, and I did technically, accidentally lead them on a high speed chase (they were way behind...they didn't catch up until I was stopped for about a minute). No complaints on my end though.

I have no problem with the po-po … actually I'm pretty much a fan …

that said, on the occasional times I've been stopped, I realize that there are some out there that will use anything to make their "quota" … so I sit quietly and wait for them to get to my window …. this way they don't see any suspicious movement, AND they see me with my seat belt on … no "faked" tickets

the last time I was stopped it was in my CRX with a tire trailer behind … with it in the way, and as low as the car is, you can't see anything inside as you approach

the officer (NC SHP) walked towards the car with his hand on his weapon (not unlatched or out… just his hand on it) … I rolled the window down and stuck both hands out where he could see them … he gave a brief thumbs up with his left hand … that made me feel a bit better

I'm sure he expected to see some 16 yr old flat bill driver, not some 60+ yr old, grey haired, white bearded dude …

I ended up with a warning ticket … NC SHP don't ever give warning tickets

I know SD is putting body cams on all it's officers soon. Our officers don't like to shoot people, just sexually harass and rape them

Good thing the camera was rolling. I actually don't see how he's not being charged with attempted murder? They are trained to shoot to kill, correct? Is there an attempted manslaughter charge?

You would think a police officer would know better and keep his mouth shut... "Anything you say, can and will be used against you."
