The Berkeley city council is seriously Berkeley'd in the head.

Berkeley is emblematic of everything that is wrong with California. It's a shame, really, because it's a beautiful state if the state government weren't so bat-E36 M3 crazy.

A recent work trip would seem to indicate Portland, OR, has a few 20 something "urban campers" to donate as well. I have never in the remaining 40+ years of walking the earth, been accosted by so many perfectly fit "20 somethings" asking for "spare change" as a was in the space of the three days I spent there. Oh, and here's a tip, if you can afford to buy weed, you can afford to eat. Got accosted by several asking for change "for food" with a blazing a doob in their mouths. They were politely declined.

The part that makes me the most ANGRY is how this is probably a lot cheaper than just about any non-generic drug that could be prescribed and would be paid for by the local / state medical system anyway! ANGRY!

Now, if you'll excuse me, I think there's some neighbor kids that I want off my lawn.

There are people camped out at our local mall asking for money. Usually they have a cell phone in one hand and a cardboard sign in another.

OK, this has to be a joke of some-kind right? I mean, nobody could propose something that off-the wall.

I checked and the mean income for the state was like 29,000. Your are going to need the state of Iowa to grow pot to keep this party going in California.

Could they? Does the entire legislature of Cali make less than 32,000/year? Cause MAYBE that would explain it. On several fronts.

Yup. There's a reason I don't go downtown anymore. That is one of them, the other being the stupid parking nonsense, which I wouldn't mind paying for if they kept the riffraff at bay. The place practically becomes a ghost town after 5pm except on the weekends when there is much merriment to partake in.

I lived downtown for a few months while waiting for my family to move out here. I grew up back east so I know how to stare people down or lie about not having cash.. but damn.. These people are the most aggressive I have ever dealt with.. I had one guy curse me out for "lying to him" about not having a watch to tell him time. I then showed him my bare wrists and told him to back off. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a can of AXE.. I was waiting for the light to turn green to cross... It happened to hit green at the right time and off I went. Leaving Staggery Mcdrunky pants and his can of AXE body spray to himself. I'm not a small guy either, 6'1" 230 and broad, but these guys aren't intimidated.

This is Berkeley, NOT California.

Berkeley has always been a VERY "hippy" city. Obviously Cal State Berkeley is there so it has a very college town (in the middle of a large urban area) thing going for it, but there are a lot of people there who never really move on from the "college time" mentality.

Unrelated personal note: I used to go to a theater on Shattuck street (main drag connected to the campus) in Berkeley a lot (took the bus). I would go on the Friday morning of the day of releases a lot. That is where I saw Blade Runner on it's premiere day.

Seems like even Fox News has a sense of humor...
