I don't think this is political...

USA put a 100% duty on Chinese electric cars.  Canada just followed suit.  It did not occur to me, in addition to Dong Heng Finest Kind electrics, all of a sudden Polestar and Volvo electrics are twice the price.

Huh.

Amazing how those guys keep on buying our debt....

Seems like they should give Polestar a break.

They are likely sourcing their batteries (certainly a very large part of the costs of the cars) from China:

The tariffs will be phased in over the next three years, officials said. Those that take effect in 2024 include EVs and EV batteries, along with solar cells, syringes, needles, steel and aluminum and more. Some would not take effect until 2026.

The simple reality of a (US) tariff is that is raises the price of that item so that it become economical to make it in the (more expensive to produce in) US, but does at least keep the money in the US economy (US workers spending it in the US).

BTW - Chinese company are quickly setting up manufacturing in countries outside Chine (e.g. Vietnam) to get around this.  Hurts Chinese workers, but still makes money for China, so something is better than nothing so I don't think the government will stop it.
