Oh, and my advice to the OP:

Get a new Ford Fiesta for $129/mo (I saw it on TV so it must be true) and buy the Jeep. You get a neat 40mpg car for about what 80% of America pays for cable to keep the mrs from climbing up your arse... and the kid gets a Jeep to drive to college in.

You want yourself a late '80s to mid '90s Japanese sports car. A 'rolla like mine, or an Accord/Prelude, Civic, or Starlet. AE101s look boring but they're a lot like AE92s except there are no unobtanium parts to worry about. An AW11 or AE86 would be great but they're not cheap.

No! Well, yes, sort of. Buy a Mazda2 instead of the fiesta. Fiestas that cheap are the sedan and they are so ugly they will hurt your soul. For just a few dollars more a month you can have the lighter more agile and all around better looking sibling of the fiesta, the 2. Seriously though, buy the jeep.

Another "buy the Jeep" vote. If you aren't driving a HUGE amount and need crazy high mileage, I don't see a problem with getting the Wrangler as long as it's in good shape. They're pretty tough little things - slow, but it'll go slowly ANYWHERE.

Prelude is a perfect answer...vtec makes em fun. Youre probably approaching Supra territory too. One of my favorite cars Ive owned was a 95 corolla (AE101 mentioned above), theyre sub $2k all day every day - a few minor mods and that thing WOKE UP bigtime. Its more fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a fast car slow...

But My vote still goes to the 2.5RS...Ive wanted one since I first saw one. You need that midnight blue color. Some guy who lived next door to a house a few of my buddies rented owned a dark blue on tan interior example...he worked 2nd shift and would come home around 2am, when we were still up partying from the night before. I mostly only ever saw that car through a foggy haze from cheap beer and chasing tail...but I think that actually adds to the allure.

Looks like you've lined up your argument quite sucinctly.

O-tay, here's what I think I'm going to do.
First off, thanks for your opinions and additions to the list. Those additions only made my job harder though haha.
I want another Jeep, BAD. I've had something like 14, all but the flat fender were daily drivers and I loved them. But....I don't want to spend $300 a month in gas. So, I'm going to replace the benz with another greasecar for the time being. Get my 944 done, then buy a Jeep to put the benz engine in. Then I can have my Jeep, and burn free fuel still. I'm sure I'm a year off from the Jeep, but that's what I gotta do.

Adding another car to the fleet would have resulted in my wife not recognizing me after the beating she'd give me.

I'm a little late to the party, but what about an early '90's Geo Tracker? They're Jeep-ish, reliable and better on gas. I've got two of the damn things at home...if only I could ever get time to finish either one...

If you are insistent on a short wheelbase 4x4, then screw the Jeep and get an Amigo. Roughly the same gas mileage and power but MUCH better build quality and yes the top still goes down!

I don't know if I'd say the Amigo has better build quality. I'm not a fan of those odd the-rear-portion-of-the-top-goes-down things and I don't want IFS on the trail. Not as stout, and more costly to fix.
Sorry, ain't nobody gonna convince me that there is an all-around better SWB 4X4 than a Wrangler.
