Looking at a 1995 RR 4.0 SE tonight that's on it's bump stops.

Less than a grand gets coils with 2" lift and shocks all the way around.

What other issues should I be looking for when examining one of these to drag home?

Gerenal consensus is, like Porsches, get the newest of each model you can afford, due to constant improvements. My '01 P38 was a great truck and I'd have another one, but only a '99-up 4.6 HSE.

Oh, and less than $500 and a few minutes of time gets new air ride all the way around. $50 for the distribution block o-rings and compressor repair kit. A lot of guys with them are swapping out the aftermarket springs for the factory air ride again, due to the way it works both on and offroad.

Coil kits aren't great for towing, you really want the air suspension for that. Air suspension repairs aren't actually that bad if you either have someone who knows their stuff or can DIY - according to my local Land Rover guy (our RR is my wife's DD and I don't work on those for anything more than the odd oil change), part of the bad/costly rep came from dealerships replacing the whole distribution block at $$$$$ instead of just replacing the O-rings.

Other things to watch our for is that the head gaskets are consumables and start leaking externally, so it's reasonably easy to spot.

Heater core is also a common failure point and a bit of a bear to replace.

Thermostats at least on the Discos with the same engine fail closed, which predictable results. I wouldn't touch one that runs even mildly hot with someone else's bargepole.

All the V8s have a drinking problem, expect ~16mpg, maybe a little more with the 4.6 and a little less with the 4.0. They're also not exactly torquey in the American V8 sense.

Oh, and they're British. If there's not at least a tiny oil leak from somewhere, some fluid needs topping up.

My Mini leaks through brand new seals in the trans, I think it's designed in. The Land Rover leaks from something like 7 locations.

The Jeep only leaks from the transfer case.

Not afraid of air suspension as I've changed it on Lincoln TCs, both coils and Arnott stuff & prefer air ride anyway. Was just thinking of how to do this without breaking the bank.

Thing is $1500 and looks to be pretty nice. Air ride broke a couple years ago and it's been sitting since.

Still looking for kayak transportation and all the trucks/suv's near me are only fit for scrap by the time they fall into my price range.

Thinking a $1500 piece of odd-junk plus a G or so will get me a solid & sorted anything is probably one of the worst ideas I've had recently.

And to think I recently claimed I would desist from displaying such mental berkeley-tardery.

I've gone back to thinking about these again....
