Since I decided to get back into autocross and cars in general in 2012 I've had to try and make a solid business case for every car purchase. It seems impossible that I was able to convince my wife that buying all of them made sense, but it's true.
But then I sold the Civic to someone who uses it as intended, and I sold the trailer because I hate trailering and I can borrow it back if I NEED it, and I find myself with an actual car budget for the first time in my adult life and for some reason Mrs. Deuce isn't demanding that I throw the money back into the general pool.
I spent three hours on Craigslist last night because this problem was preventing sleep. But I couldn't find ANYTHING I wanted to buy. Lots of cool stuff I'd like to poke around (I don't want to own a 914, but I want to mess with one.) A few things 15 year old me would have bought in a second (sand rails are soooooo cooooool). And the occasional lunacy (I should buy a dump truck, no, a fire truck, no a semi!) But when it was all said and done nothing cought my eye. At all.
This is a very new sensation and I'm not sure how to proceed.

Well, you've come to the right place for help with your problem. Now, how much of your money are we looking to spend?

You should buy a Morgan.

Could I interest you in a properly modified SooperKia? Only (looks at price for usedC6).... $15k with spares.

There, said it first.

I don't think you'll be able to handle it. Give me the money.

If you chose not to take my advice, my secondary advice is to take your time and poke around. There's a lot of crap on CL. There are diamonds out there, but you have to be patient and find them. Also, I always say "You'll know it when you see it". Something will call to you that you can't resist...just make sure you're in the right section of CL when you find that thing that calls to you...

Hmmm... An abundance of time and money?

Sounds like you need a BiTurbo

Sounds to me that you have the same problem as most of us on this board. You don't have ENOUGH of a car budget to buy you all the cars you're interested in playing with.

You need to figure out what you want to use it for/do with it first. Do you want to scratch a vintage car itch and learn pre-war cars? Maybe you've always wanted a sleeper. Or, something fun and classic that the whole family can enjoy? Sounds like the autocrossing/racing itch has been scratched. Do you want something you can flip when you grow bored of it and not lose your shirt?

That'll help lead you in the right direction.

You should buy another 911, since your last one got commandeered.

I came down here to suggest this.

Considering your location, I would look for an older GM F-Body and hunt 200mph.

How about a pickup version of Fergus?

Who doesn't want a fire truck?

You probably need a Jeep to keep at the cabin.

In reply to EvanB:

I looked at all three of those last night. In fact that fire truck has been for sale for a while. I always click on it. I think I want a ladder truck though.
Anyway, on any given day I have what's left over from the R63, the V Wagon, the 911 or my wife's FJ Cruiser depending on what she drives. The Insight and Fergus keep me in projects and the truck is always (boringly) there when I need it. If I didn't hate convertibles on principle I'd look at Miatas, but other than AX I don't have much use for one, and I've driven them back to back with the V and the V is more fun to AX. Yes, dancing with a fat girl is fun if she knows how to dance.
I kind of want another RX car, one that I don't actually hate driving, but I despise Subarus and I can't find anything else to be excited about. I have a couple of open co-drive seats for when I actually make an event which seems harder and harder to do anyway.
And we're talking $6k now or $12-13k if I were to sell the truck which everyone is OK with as long as it actually makes me happy to do so.
It's hard to out muscle the V or out exotic the 911 or out comfort the R63.

Speaking of Fergus... Hmm?

And the rally-x car doesn't need anything? Or did the RX7 get sold and I somehow missed it?

To be honest, I am in a similar situation. I have enough money right now that I could use to buy another car if it tickles my fancy. I definitely do NOT have enough time to deal with another car. I had to remind myself that over the weekend when I went casually searching CL for used M3's in the $10K range...

In reply to Ian F:

That's a pretty good analysis. Not enough time (or energy really) to take on a car that will mostly sit and wait for me to work on it.
The RX-7 went to live with my Rallysprint co-driver. I didn't really sell it as asked him to go have fun with it. I liked it, but sort of hated it. I hate trailering, and driving that car in the Texas heat was an exercise in massive suffering. So for maybe two events a year it was awesome, and that assumes I could make those events and they didn't get rained out. I also really like introducing people to RX and it was kind of crappy for that.

i dont see something ridiculous in that list, so i would say some old, noisy, crazy rat rod

keep the twin turbo's and hook them up or sell them off and throw on a set of zoomies

Formula car+ rallyx....I think we have a case for an exocet with a paco lift. Put a lid on it and it wouldn't be a convertible....and it's hard to argue with a grown up go-kart with plates.

Gonna go out on a limb and say, what about a vintage project?

Something in a light restoration.

I bought my Bugeye because it was on my "something I want to experience" list, restoring a car. Competitive, no, comfort, HAH, but somehow its fulfilling. Cant wait to drive it.

You hate convertibles, in your budget, you could afford to do a REALLY nice MGB-GT. Or P1800, or... Perhaps a Fiat X/1-9?

Any interest in scratching a vintage itch?
