I-95N in Delaware has been closed since about 2:00a this morning because a tractor trailer load of pennies nailed the jersey wall at a divide, overturned, and burned up.

Everything you see in the foreground of this picture is pennies scattered over the roadway.

In related news, it took me an hour and 20 minutes to go 11 miles this morning, and I don't even go anywhere near I-95 on my commute.

Yeah, we tried to visit 'grandma' south of Dover by leaving on a Friday evening once. ONCE. NEVER AGAIN.

And for friends in Newark and autocrosses in Glasgow I take the leisurely route through amish country and approach with caution from the MD corner.

there is a reason I usually take the Ferry to Lewis rather than dealing with the Delaware Memorial Bridge and the quagmire that is I95

Is that the engine from the truck sitting off to the right in the first picture?

One reason I don't want to live anywhere near that bullE36 M3.

Yeah. There's a major split there and he pretty much hit the end of the jersey wall divider right on the nose.

Minor injuries to the driver, luckily, but I bet there's a lot of people who want to beat him to death right now. Front view:

Rear view - I believe in the foreground is one of the drive axles, but the cab is waaaaaaay down there in the background:

There's gotta be at least seven dollars worth of change here...

So assuming most of those pennies are newer than 1982 that is not all that much copper since pennies are down to 2.5% copper. For every $1.00 of new pennies there is only 2.5 old (1793 to 1837) pennies worth of copper.

I wonder where all those pennies were headed? What is the going price for zinc anyway?

They were actually blanks headed to the mint in Philadelphia to be struck.

So they weren't a "penny" just yet then. They were just copper plated zinc disks.

Dunno about you guys, but I save any penny dated up through 1981. I missed out on the 1964 quarters and dimes. Yup, pure copper pennies. That's my retirement plan right there. I must have like 20 of them already.

So sluggish traffic due to slugs? Exactly how I'd enter it at work.

I can only imagine the chaos if it had occurred on train tracks. I'm also surprise that it didn't happen about 70 miles further east on 30 in PA.

In reply to Dr. Hess:

I have a whole mason jar full of them. When I do my annual change sort, all the pre-81 stuff goes into a separate jar for hoarding against the coming copperpacalypse.

I think you'd do better stealing AC units.

Are you Duke from BMC? I've been with your club once with my silver BMW STX car. Well run event!

I was also down in New Castle today for an interview. I heard the news on my way down 95S and was scared it would cause backups on my side. No issues though, but they were still talking about the closings at 3PM when I left.
