Ok so I am starting to hit the gym about twice a week (which is about the most my schedule will allow). I was wondering if anyone had an suggestions as to what I could do on days where I don't get to gym to get in better shape. I am trying to lose about about 10lbs and just get more toned.

Reduce simpler sugars and just be consistent with your workouts no matter what they are.

If you drink pop, knock it off. Same goes for soda and coke depending one where you're from.

I concur with ev everything previously mentioned. 50 push-ups and sit-ups everynight before bed. It takes less than 5 minutes and you'll be amazed at the progress you make. If you can't do 50, then start with whatever you CAN doand add one of each every 2 days. If that doesn't work, do 10 push-ups/sit-ups at every commercial break while watching TV in the evenings.

Coke down here. And I was only drinking diet but I am trying to cut that out. I am down to two at most a day.

cut that out entirely and I bet you'll lose the 10lbs.

I can do sets of about 150 situps easily. I need to do pushups as well. I basically want to come up with a 20-30 minute routine that I can do without any equipment before I go to sleep.

I'm on the road a lot, which makes it hard to stay committed to a routine. If there's a gym (and time) in the hotel, I try to squeeze in a workout. If not - there are several exercises that I can do in my room - 100 crunches and 50 squats to start. Regular and tricep push ups for the arms. Single leg deadlifts, with or without weights will keep that butt nice and tight and improve balance. Crawling plank is really good for tight core muscles.

Side planks, up down planks, squats, lunges. I'm really bad at working out myself. I've been working on and off with personal trainers at the gym for several years now. The one I'm working with now is really good. After being sick and lazy all winter, I've lost 7 lbs in 3 weeks and my cardio is coming back strong.

Also track your calories. I'm using Loseit.com. Its working so far. Its amazing how much crap you eat even if you think it is healthy.

If getting toned is the objective, do cardio stuff. From runs to walks, stairs, bicycles, etc.

Best piece of equipment I ever bought, a heart rate monitor.

Doing work outs just before going to bed isn't nearly as effective as doing them after you get home from work.

There's an M.D. that has a regular column in most daily newspapers....Doctor Gott. He has a simple diet that really gets the pounds off, and as a consequence, you get in shape faster. You eliminate sugar and flour from your diet. Sounds weird, doesn't it? But it really works, tho it is harder to follow than it sounds.

Check out what the Marines or Navy Seals do. (or Rangers or Delta or whatever your particular interest) They don't get fancy equipment and they are pretty tough.

What about right when you get up then? On the days I can't make the gym, I usually leave at 7:45AM and get back at 8 or 9 PM.

On a note that's not quite related....

I remember an interview with a mens gymnast at the previous Olympics, and recall that a question was asked about them doing weight work, and I'm pretty sure the reply was that they didn't. Just the normal work they did for competition was enough to get them that strong.

So simple for gymnasts, too.

Planks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6I990Wbr1JE Walking it forward and back really intensifies the workout

Lunges: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfAFYtJNBJs&feature=related

Add weights, then a step or bench to really build up leg and glute muscles.

So, the best way to build your body to do something is to do it a lot :) Makes sense...

Even better.

I would like to go work out in the mornings instead of after work. But I'm usually at work by 5am and work 10 hour days. Not going to start getting up at 2:30am....
