I'm looking at adding underhood insulation to my cars, especially since one of them still has paint on the hood. Foil tape has been suggested, has anyone tried it? It seems like a good solution, but I wonder how the glue holds up over time.

is the dynomat underhood kit too pricey for you?

There is HVAC stuff rated to pretty good temps at a fraction of the cost of the dynomat stuff. I bet the dynomat is tits but I have never been able to afford anything they make by a wide margin.

I have used this to fabulous result underhood including a van cowel that has seen some pretty ouch temperatures.. Insulate your ducts with the leftovers and still be able to buy a couple dynomat shares.

I use that reflectix stuff on the inside of my exhaust tunnel in the miata. Helps alot.... but i wouldn't expose it to direct heat. It is just foil lined bubble wrap when you get down to it.

It depends a lot on what you're trying to accomplish. Are you just trying to protect the paint?

The gold foil tape is really, really good for reflecting heat to reduce intake temps, I'm using the Design Engineering reflect-a-gold tape in my turbo Miata with good results. I wouldn't cover the whole underside of a hood with it; that's not really what it's meant for. I'm just using it on the heat shield around the air filter and the metal sections of the intake charge pipe.

Yeah, DEI, Koomat, Thermo-tec, Heatshield Products and Quietride all sell various versions of heat shielding materials. They may cost a bit more than a standard foil, but I'd bet they will hold up for a longer time, and work better.

Yeah I'm just looking for something to protect the paint in this case...

DEI's reflect-a-cool seems like the best match, they recommend it for use on firewalls and it's about half as expensive as the reflect-a-gold.

You guys have to keep in mind that he can't just go to Auto Zone, he's in Barbados. Pricey to ship anything in.

Very true, but I don't think I can get away from importing in this case. Luckily I'll have a chance to smuggle some back from vacation next week
