Currently on a 5 week family vacation to Canada and Alaska. We are in Talkeetna today, and we found this:
I can't tell if it was made like that, or if it was "stretched". Pretty cool though.
You can see the whole of our vacation on this blog;

I have some other pics of interesting things I will add as the internet gets better...
I'm pretty sure it was made like that. There used to be one around here when I was in high school. It used to belong to the prison system if I remember correctly.
Checker Marathon Aerobus. Commonly known as an Airport Car because these cars would be lined up outside airports and read something like "Holiday Inn" on the sides. Repaced today by the passanger van to complete the same task.
Pretty rare and the one you found is pretty period correct.
A Dr. in Orangeburg, SC with a very large family had one of these as the family car. It was funny seeing tehm drive around town. They also had a gas pump at their house. I'm guessing they aren't fuel efficient.
There was a company named Armbruster (later named Stageway) that built similar stretch wagons out of Pontiacs, Chevys and other brands. They were typically used as airport limousines.

Wonder if that's the same one I saw when I was stationed at Fairbanks, Alaska in the early/mid-80's. The was a guy that lived outside of Fairbanks back then that had a lot of kids, some were foster kids. Used an Checker Aerobus like that as family transportation.
The Checker factory is still standing in Kalamazoo. I totally wanted to use their "parking lot/test track" for tarmac rallycross.

Sweet. We spent time in Talkeetna a few years ago while visiting family in AK. Very cool town.
