Here's a non-country one:

Most of the country musicians I know can't stand new-country either. There's a guitarist I know who played in a metal band for years, and now plays in a new-country cover band, he told me "Who'd have thought I'd be playing metal in standard-tuning, and country in drop-D?"

Like you said, it is all new music really - country is just especially awful because I hate steel and slide guitars but Taylor Swift is equally as horrifically bad.

I expect a lot of talented guys get boxed out because they are ugly berkeleys.

I wonder if Geddy Lee or Tom Petty could get a job if they had to start over.

i get some sort of a perverse pleasure out of watching country music videos on CMT from time to time.. the live ones are the best, because there is always one guy with a mohawk in the band and at least one guy with a sleeve of tattoos on at least one arm, and everyone is trying to make it seem like the boring E36 M3 they are playing takes a lot of effort and imparts a lot of energy into the crowd..

there is one Kenny Chesney live video where i counted at least 7 guitarists, 2 drummers, a bass player, and 2 keyboardists on the stage, in addition to him- and he had a freakin guitar, too. and the song was just booooorrring... but again, it's mildly funny to watch it just to keep up with the pulse of what drunk white women like to listen to when they are at bars on a girl's night out..

I've told this here before, at one of my old houses the neighbors raised Paso Finos, and had a pair of burros too. The burros were really friendly, loved people and having their backs and butts scratched. I never knew their real names, but I called one of them Taylor and the other Swift because they sounded just like the "singer" when they brayed.

I was on the snap-on truck last week and there was a pop country song about going to the gotdamned dentist playing. The freaking dentist. That is not song material.

There has always been this unwritten rule that you don't have to write a good song, you just need something that the audience can relate to. That is how Harry Chapin made it big with a mediocre song like cats in the cradle, but the freaking dentist? Drilling before the novocaine kicked in? This is taking it too far.

Zach brown? I think is his name. Got Dave grohl to play with him once. Primarily country iirc. Damn good musician too. But most of em suck the meat pole.

The phrase used to be "three chords and the truth." Nowdays you leave out the truth part. Seriously, back in the stone ages (mid-nineties) when I played in a country dance band, we tried to keep current with the then-current country top 40. When you'd play a club, the management wanted you to keep people dancing to work up a thirst. Invariably when we'd play the new stuff, everybody would be glued to their chairs, some would listen, but most would just talk and some would drift toward the door. So we'd launch into a medley of Ray Price tunes and in 30 seconds every single person would be on the dance floor. Same thing with the rock tunes we had to mix in to keep a variety. If it was recorded before the late eighties, nobody cared. I'm becoming an old fart, these days I don't like current rock or country. Modern western (which is decidedly NOT country) is very good if you can find it, but in general rock sucked after Skynyrd and Country wasn't far behind. There used to be interesting melodies chords or rhythms, and interesting lyrics. Today, not so much. Bob Seger was right.

My favorite country music is George Jones, Jimmie Rodgers, and Ween.

Cowpop sucks.

He just played with Chris Cornell on SNL, too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiIfqEdpEyU

This is more classic rock/quasi-country rock. Solid song, but 5 guitars on one stage is ludicrous. Too much lost in the mix, no way of hearing the fiddle player and the percussionist is lost in the ether, too.

As for pop country, it's about as dumbed-down as Top-40 pop is. Musically, this is the lowest the lowest common denominator has gone. There was a time not long ago when popular music wasn't as moronic as it is now. It's bad.

That said, I'll always tell you that great music is around--it's on the underground and you have to do some digging to find it.

Modern country sucks, it's all pop country. I grew up with 80's and 90's country.

It could be worse though.

Besides, country music, at least popular country, died in 1986 when Columbia dropped Johnny Cash because he was no longer relevant. Johnny berkeleying Cash.

the Zac Brown Band is good stuff.. they don't consider themselves a country band... or a rock band... or any kind of band: they are just the Zac Brown Band, and they play whatever they damn well please.

they recorded a whole album (or was it just an EP?) with Dave Grohl in his studio, and called it "The Dave Grohl Sessions".. Zac is in the new Foo Fighters song "Congregation" singing backup vocals, and that song was recorded in Zac's studio.

all that, and they did a pretty damn good cover of a famous Queen song.. no, he aint no Freddy Mercury: but i don't see anyone else tackling that song and pulling it off like they did..

Geddy, as a bassist - absolutely. There's a bigger progressive music fan-base now than there ever has been! As a singer - if he didn't play bass...who knows? His vocal style always seemed to polarize people.

I remember my grandmother complaining about "that blind boy" (Ronnie Milsap) ruining country by making it sound poppy. So its been a complaint since at least the late 70s or so. Seems that is where alot of crossover pop/country songs began (Rhinestone Cowboy anyone?)

The biggest issue is the incestuous nature of bro-country. You write a hit for an artist and you get your own deal.

Just look at the song writers on the 6 similar songs.

Blake Shelton-Sure be cool if you did-Rodney Clawson,Chris Tompkins,Jimmy Robbins

Luke Bryan-Drunk on you- Rodney Clawson,Chris Tompkins,Josh Kear

Cole Swindell-Chillin it-Cole Swindell,Shane Minor

Parmalee-Close your eyes-Adam Craig,Trent Tomlinson,Shane Minor

Florida-Georgia Line-This is how we roll+Tyler Hubbard, Brian Kelley, Cole Swindell,Luke Bryan

Chase Rice-Ready Set Roll-Chris DeStefano,Rhett Akins,Chase Rice

Note that Chris Tomkins, Trent Tomlinson, and Rhett Akins are all singers also.

I place some of the blame on the record labels for boxing in artists to sell albums. Although some of them are talentless hacks who are riding the wave.
