Required in WI, haven't had one on any of our cars/van for years. Got pulled over for "no front plate" a few weeks ago, no ticket, just asked if I had been drinking - it was 11pm.

Grew up in Cali that had them. Also lived in Washington state and Alaska that had them. Didn't mind them when cars where designed to have front plates. Like when bumpers were metal. Cars I have now don't have mounting locations for them and glad I live in Alabama now that doesn't require them. RX8 and Miata don't have decent place on the front to put a license plate. Have seen front plates mounted on RX8 and Miata when traveling to places that has them. Look half-a$$ed to me.

No front plates in Florida, front plates in Nebraska...unless you get a "vintage" plate, in which case just the back one. Hiyo!

I had forgotten that I run a car without one unitl someone metioned keeping a plate behind the seat. The VW lacks even a conceviable place to put one as it has no bumpers. Been meaning to make a temp holder and always be "coming back from a car show and forgot to put it back on." Damn, and I thought I finally had it legal.

sounds like a worthwhile savings to me...

They also cannot help fuel economy

I honestly don't really mind them. I've been looking at cars with front plates my whole life, it's almost weird to see a car without one. I might get an offset mount that goes in the tow hook hole and then use the trim piece that covers the stock front mounting location on the new car, though.

Waste of metal, money, and despoiler of front bumpers. Never used to run one in Ontario but my dad was driving one of my cars shortly after I moved away and he got pulled over almost immediately. I do have one on my German-registered Lotus because most people I asked here seemed to think I'd get a ticket pretty quick without one.

For that matter, rear plates are a waste of metal & money too. Let's abolish them all.

I consider them a nuisance, but it's not the worst thing to deal with. I agree that cars like Miatas don't have a real suitable location. Most Miatas here in NJ have them in the center of the nose.....sort of like a big wart.

My Front Miata Tag is offset and hangs on a bracket attached to the right tow loop. It's not ideal, but a slight improvement (in my opinion).

My wife got a warning from Texas DPS for not having a front plate on her TT. I recommended that she just ignore it. She ordered the front plate bracket from eBay and MADE me drill holes in the front bumper and pop rivet it in place. I wept. I hate front plates.

Kansas doesn't require.

Missouri does. However, if the vehicle in question is a rig used for towing (truck, suv, etc), you don't have to run plates on the back. Not sure what it takes to document it as a tow rig though... just know I see an awful lot of big trucks with no plates showing from behind.

I would imagine they wrote the law with the idea that those vehicles would never drive around without a trailer...

As a state that doesn't require them (PA) among states that do (NJ, NY, MD) I would just like to say

$115 fine here in Ontario, I know, I've had to pay it. One of my car writer friends was pulled over in a Porsche with no plate. He had to have it towed back since the cops wouldn't even let him drive it. Ridiculous. I got pulled over less than 4 blocks from Mercedes in an SLS with no front plate. After I showed the officer the plate (sitting on the front seat beside me) and promised him I was just taking it back, he let me go with no fine.

ohio requires them. my MIL got a ticket for having it in the windshield after they moved from MI, car had no plate holder.

historical and collector vehicle plates are only required on the back. one of the big reasons i am getting collector plates for my impala is so i don't need a front plate. no way i'm drilling holes in my bumper for a plate holder.

years ago at one of the corvette gatherings a guy from wisconsin used to take his front plate off and put the body color cover back on as soon as he got out of his state. he got pulled over and ticketed in indiana because the cop said "i know you need a front plate in your state"

took the front bumper off my truck 2 years ago to put the plow brackets on. never put the bumper back on, plate still attached to bumper sitting behind my garage.

Supposed to have it in Illinois, but the Miata doesn't have a spot for it. Been pulled over for running a stop sign (I did not see said stop sign) and the cop mentioned it. I showed him the plate in the passenger seat and told him to look at the lack of a lip and the leftover double sided tape on the bumper; I was lucky that the thing was getting repaired at the time.
