We have watched the movie but just started watching the series. I'm up to episode 2--watched it twice, in fact, since a lot seemed to happen in a short amount of time.

Kinda sad. Very windy during the opening credits, too.

I'm going to stick with it.

Are you watching original or Brotherhood? I hear that brotherhood is the better iteration even though the overall story is supposed to be the same. I haven't watched brotherhood though. Really enjoyed the original. Definitely sad.

Good question. We're watching the ones on Hulu. I believe it's Brotherhood. And, yes, sad.

Watched a good bit of anime, but never got into that one. I highly recommend anything by Shinchiro Watanabe. Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Terror In Resonance, Space Dandy, it's all good. Space Dandy is still some of the silliest, most satirical nonsense I have ever watched.

Both the original and Brotherhood are outstanding. Brotherhood is the basically the manga. Both, are emotionally charged and deal out a good flow between suspense, drama, and action.

After watching both, I prefer Brotherhood over the original anime.

Brotherhood is a bit easier to understand and more complete. It has the happy ending of the Manga (original story).

The FMA03 series that was on Cartoon Network was pretty difficult to understand towards the end and has a bittersweet ending. I was kinda let down by the ending.

I liked Brotherhood less of the two.

Still both excellent.

Brotherhood is better as the ending actually makes some sense. FMA's original anime ending was a fully rounded WTF?

You have to watch the first half of the original until they get through the prison for it to make much sense at the start of Brotherhood.

I loved the series quite honestly.

Outlaw Star, Robotech, and Hunter X Hunter as well

Great, now I have the Robotech theme song stuck in my head.

Watched the series many years ago when my daughter was a little kid. "Kinda Sad" does not cover it!

You want to talk grim, I've been watching the new Gundam series, Iron-Blooded Orphans. Wow, what a downer. It deals heavily with slavery and abuse and child soldiers, main characters get murdered or maimed frequently. I see no happy ending to this one. But, damn, if it isn't the best anime I've ever watched.

I watched both but prefer the original Fullmetal Alchemist. I felt it made the consequences of using alchemy more front and center. It is a VERY good story still on the top of my list. I find some people try to force watch the series in the chronological order of the storyline rather than the order of the episodes. I think they are missing out on what the storytelling mechanism is doing for them. Watching as intended makes it feel more like hearing stories from those that remember the times of the Elric brothers or even hearing them tell their story.

I admit that after one of the episodes I was actually emotionally moved by the terror instilled within the characters such that I had a hard time sleeping. Only Neon Genesis Evangelion and Event Horizon have done that to me before.

I guess I should say that it would be unlikely that I would let my kids watch it with me. Maybe as they get to older teens I would be ok.

Evangelion, now that's a berked up series. Even the Rebuild is some frightening stuff.

Never got crazy into Anime or Manga but FMA (the original and Brotherhood) is my favorite. Watched it multiple times with my son. We binged Initial D last year or so and started Attack on Titan but kinda fizzled out after 10 episodes or so. Never understood Naruto or DragonBall. Love the Airbender series too even though that's probably not considered 'real' Anime. Will have to give the suggestions above a try.

In reply to DuctTape&Bondo:

Could never get into Initial D or Attack On Titan. Naruto and Dragonball are overhyped and too mainstream, sorry if that makes me sound like an elitist jerk, but it's the truth.

Erased, despite being only 12 episodes, is absolutely amazing. Sadly, because it's a crime drama, once you watch it the first time, it's hard to rewatch because you already know how it turns out.

QFT!

It's grim without being Zeta, Char's Counterattack, or Victory Gundam by Kill em all Tomino.

I like FMA brotherhood, was a good watch. Its sad, but not Grave of the Fireflies or Now and Then, Here and There level. A few of my favorite emotional series are Birdy the Mighty: Decode (... its like a mix of Men in Black and Wonder Woman), Casshern Sins (who knew robots could make you break down and cry...and the artwork is just weirdly gorgeous!), and Usagi Drop (so cute and a little sad that it hurts, in a good way).

I dunno, the past couple episodes of season 2 have started to get into Kill 'Em All territory. Apparently the writer actually wanted to kill a handful off in episode 23 of season 1, and it certainly looks like they were dead, and then they got talked into not killing them, so they kind of inexplicably survived. But so far, 2 of those 3 have bit it this season

And one series that I'm totally engrossed in (and have been since the first trailer in 2013) is RWBY (by Rooster Teeth, the company behind Red vs Blue...) Volume 5 can't start soon enough in October.

I agree on brotherhood having the edge in being better. The story is slightly better and the action is way better.

Attack on Titan is great, Very dramatic tough lol.

Love Love Cowboy Bebop
