My wife got me a pressure washer for Christmas. She didn't know there was a difference between gas and electric, and just bought the best deal that she found with a high psi rating. She ended up with this electric one here...

Westinghouse Electric Pressure Washer

I initially thought that I needed to switch it out for the gas version-  almost the same price, $20 more. She got a good deal on the electric. But the specs look really good for an electric.

Electric- 3200 psi, 1.76 gallons per minute

Gas- 3200 psi, 2.5 gallons per minute

GPM is significantly higher with gas, but the electric should still be enough?

I'll be using it for occasional washing the house, driveway, patio, fences, cars, etc.

My understanding-

Benefits of gas

Higher GPM, which should mean faster cleaning.

No electric cord to deal with along with the hose

Benefits of electric

No gas to refill

No gas engine to maintain and store

Quieter

Lighter

Turns on and off with the trigger. No need to turn off the gas engine and restart when pausing work to avoid overheating the pump.

The wild card- CA is outlawing new gas powered next year, so it's now or never if I want gas.

My electric is only 1800psi but I only break out the gas one for really tough stuff, the electric is much more convenient and works fine unless I need to blast peeling paint off concrete or something.

I have had a Honda powered gas unit for almost 20 years.  It needs basically no care and feeding.  About all I do with it is keep Sta-Bil in it over the winter.  PSI at GPM is very important if you want anything more than something for washing cars.

Your wildcard has me leaning gas.

I would get this if your driveway is bigger than a single parking spot. HF makes a version too.

My parents have both. The electric is good for washing cars and quick jobs. The gas gets used for everything else outdoors. But the electric gets used in their basement - not really a basement so much as a cellar, but they get iron ochre and need to clean the sump pump pipes regularly. Pretty narrow use case though.

Yes, definitely getting a surface cleaner. I just discovered those when researching pressure washers.

My experience has electric ones basically being non serviceable. If it breaks, it's dead dead. Even the cheap Chinese gas ones can usually be repaired if something goes sideways, or re engineered. Added benefit that they're built to the same m22 fitting standard (usually) as most commercial pressure washers (the electric ones aren't ) so you can walk into any hardware store and build whatever freakshow of a brass setup you need to wash some E36 M3. Or...build a flamethrower. I'm not your dad. Definitely don't do this.

I also have both, my gas one was a trash-picked 4hp horizontal shaft Honda.  I bought a new pump and 50ft hose for it.  I didnt even drag it out of the shed this year.

My son likes to use the (disappointingly mis-named) foam cannon to wash his car, so he got an electric SunJoe which works well for cleaning the deck, cars, etc.

I did not know that surface cleaner was a thing; I'll be picking one up at some point!

I have both. The electric ones are much more convenient. The gas versions are much more powerful.

I haven't used my gas one in over a year.

That Westinghouse unit looks pretty solid, I'd stick with it.  I have a similar Black & Decker electric that came with it's own wheels and handle like that and it's good for things around the house.

On the gas vs. electric, as many have pointed out the electric ones are way more convenient for most jobs.  I like that I can drain mine and bring it into the basement to keep it from freezing without worrying about draining a gas tank.  My company buys a couple of pressure washers every spring, we use them for condenser coil cleaning on air cooled equipment on the roof.  We used to buy gas ones thinking "better, last longer" but have switched to only electric ones.  They last just as long and we don't have to worry about the guys carrying gas cans in the vans.

I have a electric washer but I only use it for my car, so it's sufficient for me. Besides, it seems quieter to me.
