He was also Brian Piccolo's best friend. I'll admit, I cried.
I actually met Gale. I caddied for him in an outing. Very, very shy. You could tell he was not happy around people. He said "Hi, I'm Gale" and then nothing to me for the next 4 holes until he asked me, very slowly, "How do I make the ball go left". I told him, turn your right hand over. He responded "And that will make the ball go left?" and I said yes. I don't think he said more than 30 words to the other golfers in the group, which was annoying for them as they paid to golf with a celebrity, but who can fault the guy for being who he is? He left without a word on the 13th hole of the day. Very odd individual. One of the other things he said was that he worked through the night; he lived in the city and commuted to the suburbs. He would leave at 7PM, and come home around 5AM.
RIP Gale. I'm proud to have met you, if only for the stories that I can tell about it.
AS a Bear fan I did grow up when he was in his prime but really I was to young to bother watching the games back then and back then only the road games were on local TV! I guess I know more about Walter Payton as he was the same age as I was. His life was even more tragic with his early death.
First "Brian's Song" movie was cheesy but good. Saw it many times.
Second "Brian's Song" movie was bad.
Book was good.
