If this is for some sort of party or event be mind full of the flammability of what you hang up. The fire in RI at the nightclub that was a concrete block cube was very bad.

I have a background in acoustics and have spent some time in a partial anechoic chamber, but did not find it bad at all, just quiet.
This. Blankets.
Thanks guys. Some of the suggestions are a little overkill (novaderrik) for what's a 4 hour party. Eventually the space will be outfitted with shop gear and noise isn't an issue. It will be expected.
I'm going to try the white noise O2Pilot linked to and see how that does.
Get some boards of fiberglass insulation and wrap it in some light weight fabric. It's cheaper than buying sound deadening panels. You could even use old ceiling tiles that are fiberglass.

Due to ear surgeries, I have a ringing and "chirping" noise in one ear that has played nonstop for 20 years. I bet it would be so loud it would be deafening. Whoa!novaderrik wrote: just copy this room and you''ll be golden:Yes those types of room are very unnerving. Your mind starts playing tricks on you fast. I have been in three different ones. In each case I just felt an irrational fear of being in there. Not good hearing every molecule of dust as they land on your earlobes. I get spooked just seeing that photo.
I was in a similar room at a industrial fan manufacturer. I was nauseated and had to walk back into the echo portion around the corner.
I think the white noise will just increase the noise. The cheap route would be the largest blankets you can hang a couple of inches from the wall on as many walls as possible. To hang them wrap the top edge over a 2x4 and screw the ends of the 2x4 into studs pinching the blanket to the wall. If you want it looking taught wrap the bottom edge around something with some weight. I'd imagine you could create any look from classy to hilarious with choices from goodwill.
