Going 'all in' on a band

For the past few years, I've been getting hooked on various bands and then go 'all in' and buy everything they've made.

Marcy Playground was followed by Blind Melon (10 years after they rose and fell), MC Chris, Tool and now my latest thing is Dropkick Murphys. So, after just having a bunch of MP3s from limewire, I just went all in and bought all six of their albums. I had a gift certificate to Amazon.com (thanks Secret Satan!) and that took care of a portion of it.

The only radio I listen to is NPR...so my music is typically limited to whatever is on my ipood...which is populated with my CD stuff or the few MP3s I've scavenged.

Normal? How do other people get interested in bands?

Usually I hear something on the radio or someone else introduces it to me. I haven't gone to alot of new band concerts as I'm not a fan of standing around in smelly crowds.

I heard "Shipping up to Boston" on the "The Departed" and Simpsons (of all places) that lead to the MP3 hunt.

My Girlfriend has been turned on to more than one band from Apple commercials. I personally haven't found much in the last ten years that I REALLY got into.

Usually the radio first. I remember getting into the Dropkick Murphys when I heard 'Rocky road to Dublin' on the local youth station.

I live in a college town, so there is an unending supply of "new" "old" and "odd" music.

I am the (staff) faculty advisor of the Sailing Club, I just pick stuff up from the students. And it isn't all that Cliche student hippie crap, there is actually a very diverse representation.

Lately I have been listing to Reggie/criol stuff as a student just got back from working at the Bitter end yacht club in the caribian.

Did you get turned on to Lucky Doobie? I got turned onto his music by my dad, who was introduced to it from living in St. Thomas.

For discovering new music: friends, family, radio, pandora, and Blues dancing. And of course this board. This board turned me onto Portishead and Bitter:Sweet, which then led me to discover other interesting groups (e.g. Massive Attack and Lovage).

Richmond is lucky enough to have one decent radio station. I get recommendations from them. I also have a ton of music-phile friends who turn me on to stuff.

Also, allmusic.com and Pandora are great hits.

Pandora. Put it on in the shop, and next thing you know, you find yourself running over to the computer to find out who a particular song is by.

Working at a friends shop, he'd put in something different than what I'd enter, so I wound up discovering stuff that I NEVER would have found on my own: Nelly Furtado, Frou Frou...stuff like that - this coming from a guy who lives on AC/DC, Motorhead, Maiden and all kinds of crazy metal stuff.

That's the way I do it; If I dig 'em, I'll end up with the whole collection.

I've found that genius thing they recently added into iTunes to be the work of the devil. It just keeps taking me to more and more stuff I really need to buy.

One thing that's introduced me to tons of music is siruis, on a 2400 mile trip it's the best thing next to sex. and you can store a song in your list so that you can see what it was when you want to "buy" it later. Plus not having to listen to some religious nut for 500 miles makes everything better. (sorry religious nuts)

if your into the dropkick murphy's then might i suggest going out and getting a bunch of punk/psychobilly, if you have even a passing fancy to the misfits then definetly do it. me, i like rockabilly alot so psychobilly was a natural step. some recommended listening, the cramps, agent orange, reerend horton heat, koffin kats, necromantix, the descendents, horror pops, samhain, the creepshow and tiger army. me, im going through another soul/psychedelic phase so i got motown soul playing right after incense and pepperments

Also check out the Street Dogs, formed by the former lead singer from the Myrphys.

not for profit styled radio station out of rochester, ny. listened to them all the time at school there and they stream on the web so i'll listen to them when i'm jonesin for new stuff or just want radio at work.

I listen to the local college station, WVUD. Since Clear Channel bought WHFS in the late '90s I haven't listened to commercial radio at all.

When I was younger, it was via music magazines and friends. I'd also buy CD's (or tapes for that matter) at a decent clip.

Now that I'm older, I'm trying to stay in touch w/ what's new and interesting, because I never want to be one of those people who stopped exploring new music after age 27.

I still read Spin monthly. Since I teach music, my students clue me into a bunch of stuff. The web (browsing youtube) is great when I have the time/ambition. The biggest help is my Sirius subscription. That's introduced me to a TON of new stuff.

However, now, when I buy music, I usually only buy single songs from amazon MP3 (trying to do as little illegal downloading as possible).

Pandora is great.

unfortunately, I have gotten on board with a band more than once from the iPod commercials.

I do dig Pandora, even though I used to be a Last.fm guy. They both do about the same thing, but Pandora has been clicking for me recently.

We have The Best Radio Station On Earth here in St. Louis, KDHX 88.1 FM, and I can't tell you how many bands I've been turned on to through that station. Bonus is that they're incredibly supportive of the local scene, so I can hear my own stuff right next to somebody like Hank or Johnny, and that's an incredibly cool feeling.

If you dig Massive Attack and Portishead, I've just started exploring Air (l'm 10 years late to the game). Some of it is similar in mood, even though it's not trip-hop

Another Pandora fan. Whenever it plays a band I really like, I add it to my quickmix. It's opened me up to a lot of different artists; The Album Leaf, Elliot Smith, Sigur Ros, Neko Case...

My friends have pretty similar taste in music, so I've got a lot of recommendations from them, too.
