The Tail of the Dragon has upped its' status as a must-drive venue - it is now a sanctioned HILLCLIMB event:

Courtesy of the Central Carolinas region of the SCCA, a few more details are here:

When they say "full safety gear" what exactly does that entail?
What sort of cars are legal? Having problems finding the full ruleset on that site.
Dood....
That is going to be awesome. I'm tempted to go and just observe. I guess I could take up the boosted Miata....
Seems it's a "Level 4" Time Trial event, which means..... log booked road race cars and full liscenses?

In reply to 92CelicaHalfTrac:
It's an SCCA-sanctioned competition event. That means NO street cars unless they and the driver are within full compliance of all safety requirements specified by the host region and the GCR:
http://cms.scca.com/documents/2011%20Tech/2011%20GCR-printed%20version.pdf
So, in short, that minimally means approved suits and apparel, helmets, restraint systems, roll bars/cages, etc, etc.

The region tries to be spectator-friendly, so (hopefully) they'll figure out a way to let non-competitors on the site while keeping them safe, too.
Here's some vids of SCCA Hillclimbing.

I didn't know the Dragon had enough elevation change to call it a hill climb. But then it is in the mountains, so what do I know.

They say 1000' over the 2.2 mile course.
And that they are not really driving the dragon.
The Dragon itself has enough elevation change. Going back down is quite the work out for your brakes. The way up, not so much.
But yeah. It's not actually on US129.
is there such a thing as hillclimb for two wheeled vehicles?
Are they only going to race the NC portion or the NC and TN portion? That will be fun to visit.
Here is a video from another one not that far away.

That served as a great reminder of just how slow those EP3s really are...
AAAUUUUGGGH. I blew my race $ on LeMons. You best believe I will be there next year!

Ditto except for the Lemons part...
Don't have enough time to get a Novice permit and rollbar this year.
Sweet, Ill have to go spectate!
Can someone explain to me exactly how to get a novice permit? I'm being told that you have to go to a driver's school, and that to go to a driver's school, you need a log-booked SCCA race car.
I'd like to run this next year in the Scort, but if i'm going to be turned away because i don't have a log-booked SCCA race car, then screw that.

Hillclimbs are on an upper tier in SCCA's Club Racing heirarchy. If you're serious about going fast on a track, be prepared to have a car that meets the current regs.
Follow this link for the path to hillclimbing:

My beef is that you don't need a log-booked car to run the Dragon hillclimb, so why do i need one to get the lisence?

Are you certain you're not confusing a "log-booked car" with one that has passed Tech and Safety inspections?
If there is a "log-book" requirement, it's likely one based on having a documented history of the car's safety record; in other words, a liability issue based on insurance concerns.
You really need to contact the SCCA or the region organizers for specific information. If you want to compete but only do so on your terms, you may not be ready to make the necessary committments.

I think he's referring to the fact that you need to have a race car first before you can get your racer's permit. So if you can't get the permit... you have a race car you aren't allowed to use.
I could be wrong, though.

That's pretty much it. In the case of this event, a solo SP/SM car with a roll bar and kill switch is considered legal. I have that.
From what i'm being told/reading, i can't use that same car to get the licensing required to compete in the even though. Makes no sense.
Although it seems that a TT permit may have different hoops to jump through, but they're pretty vague. More research is necessary.
So... in other words it sounds great but only the holy few will be allowed on the course? I'm confused.

In reply to Duke:
That's why race-prepped, "log-booked" cars are readily available for rent. And, why he needs to follow thru on asking the right questions with the right people.
I don't think any SCCA staff or Dragon organizers are regular board contributors, hence the recommendation to go up the food chain........
