I've seen these folks live, and the bass player is damn impressive!

When I was up in New York a few months ago I saw Stu Hamm. He's also not from these parts. (And that night he was gigging with Alex Skolnick, another alien.)

Last year at the Experience PRS they did Manic Depression live with three guitarist and three bassists. These videos doesn't do it justice. It was amazing.

By the way, afterward we chatted with Emil Werstler for a bit. He's just like this normal, polite dude.

In reply to Trans_Maro:

I sat down & spent a month earlier this year learning that whole damn song. What a monster! I can only imagine what Cliff would have come up with by now if he was still here...

Does this count as a "Bass Riff"?

A scientific expedition disembarks from its plane at the final outpost of civilisation in the deepest Amazon rain forest. They immediately notice the ceaseless thrumming of native drums.

As they venture further into the bush, the drums never stop, day or night, for weeks. The lead scientist asks one of the natives about this, and the native's only reply is "Drums good. Drums never stop. Very bad if drums stop."

The drumming continues, night and day, until one night, six weeks into the trip, when the jungle is suddenly silent. Immediately the natives run screaming from their huts, covering their ears. The scientists grab one boy and demand "What is it? The drums have stopped!" The terror-stricken youth replies "Yes! Drums stop! Very bad!" The scientists ask "Why? Why? What will happen?" Wide-eyed, the boy responds, " . . . BASS SOLO!!!"

No, no, good lord no. Cliff, we get it, you have a bass and a wah pedal. Now go sit in the corner.

get past the effects and listen to the playing.. there's a lot going on... but Cliff peaked on his last studio album, on Orion... that whole song is built around his bass playing, and it's glorious:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzMJhOwBLqw

there is a video out there somewhere of that song synced over a space shuttle launch, one of the later launches that had all the external cameras...

one thing to remember about Cliff Burton: he was only 24 when he died..

But would add Billy Cobham Stratus to the list.
Cobham's a drummer.
None of the bands mentioned are bass players, either. Besides, does anybody here know who Leland Sklar is?

Well, I do...and apparently you do...so that makes two...

If you watch this video you will be treated to a concert by some of the most accomplished rock musicians of today. Tony levin on bass, John Petrucci on guitar, Jordan Rudess on keyboards, and Mike Portnoy on drums. They are Liquid Tension Experiment, and they are unbelievable.

Bravenrace nailed it on the head with Liquid Tension Experiment.

Cliff Burton was a monster. For Whom the Bell Tolls was one of the first songs I ever learned to play on the bass. Christian McBride, Stanley Clarke get my votes.

Justin Chancellor from Tool is a really good solid bass player. Nothing flashy but can hold the anchor in a song like no other.

Metamorphasis from Muse has a really cool bass line.

In a different genre, I like Bernard Edwards playing on "Good Times". I also like Bob Babbit on "Scorpio".

I also know who Le Sklar is.

Entwistle. I saw The Who twice over the years, once in the late 80s and again in the 90s (too young for the Moon era, unfortunately). They were in good form both times. The Ox was jaw-droppingly good, especially in concert. 5:15 has some nice riffs, especially live. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yd6S0BrI9zw

Anyone know of Roger Moutenot? Seems to be mostly an engineer and producer but he plays, too. He just propels the E36 M3 out of this Heather Eatman song, for instance: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bu9nUQis5d0

Leon Wilkeson doesn't get much notice, but did some nice work. The guitar players got the most attention but Leon laid down a nice foundation for them to work with. That Smell: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZDB-yswOrzc Gimme Back My Bullets: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIRZh_ZqdbI

Pffft...

I saw Anderson, Wakeman, and Howe when Yes played at the "Tit" in Atlanta. Bruford had just departed but I made up for it a little later when King Crimson played at the Municipal Auditorium. That was before Levin but the band had John Wetton on bass so that was no loss.

Levin exists on my vinyl collection, though; lots of him.

That is a good one--and fun/easy to play.

Last night I played "Fire" (Jimi Hendrix) and "Black Sabbath" (that one's obvious). Two more neat riffs for the pile.

OK, so he only has 2 bass strings on it (and a couple guitar strings up top) but I love Mark Sandman's jazzy, bass-noir playing.
