Got a call from my buddy who lives a few blocks away last night, apparently someone put a flyer on his door that the City Council is talking about throwing up a "Low Income Housing" Apt. building about a 1/2 mile from where we live.
As you can imagine I'm completely against this and plan to do everything in my power to show the council why this is a bad idea.
I plan on being at the City Hall meeting next month and having a statement prepared.
Any of you guys dealt with this before?

Sure. Who hasn't?
I've gone before Council a couple of times, and it's important to have your ducks in a row.
The hard part is deciding who your ducks are.
When asked why you object, "I don't like it." will not cut the muster. You need to have solid reasons and proof that such a development would be a detriment to the neighborhood and the community in general.
Lawyers are the easy answer, but realtors and developers can help for much less. Estimate property values and impact statements about the area, and move accordingly.
Don't be suprised if you lose. But there's little harm in trying.
But for god's sake don't fight the Wal Mart!
By me we have this government office called Town & Country Development Planning, which should more accurately be called The Department of Corruption & Useless Wasteage, or Argument for Libertarianism: Exhibit A.
They promised only single houses would be allowed in my neighborhood, but I guess money passed between the right hands and now there are 3 apartment complexes built nearby.
And some people want an HOA on top of this bullE36 M3!?
Is it going to be section 8 eligible? Bad news, IMO, if it is.
I assume a "developer" is putting this up to be a money loser to balance the books, but they tout it as a city built and/or run building.
I guess my main argument would be based on currently available housing in the area that could be considered low income. Try to portray the available housing as adequate for the area. But again, is it one 4-20 apt building or a complex? The attack is different.
My first call though would be trying to get the agenda for the meeting and a copy of this proposal. I assume, again, that is probably is a planning commission meeting, not a full council meeting unless it has been put forth to the whole board, in which it should be referred back to committee if it already hasn't been.

So you hae them down there too. My last apartment was in a neighborhood that allowed a number of properties to become section 8. Luckily by the third shooting I had bought a house somewhere else. Good Luck.
From my understanding, it's a complex. I'll get a copy of the flier from my buddy this weekend (I'm going to enjoy Memorial Day, then spend until June 28th preparing).
I don't know if there is any housing withing a 1 mile radius that would be considered "affordable" for low income housing. We purchased our house in September at JUST UNDER $100k, with comps in the neighborhood being $98-110k. My buddies edition on the other side of 51st is in the $140-180k range.

When one of the new neighbors was moving in, I was outside working on the Samurai, and one of the moving guys says "Nice jeep, wanna sell it?"
Later that afternoon the same apartment gets robbed. Great...
