My son Ian proposed to his girlfriend Kim yesterday at a vineyard in eastern Long Island. She jumped up and down, squealed a lot, but eventually said yes.
Last week he drove to her parents house to talk to her father. He's happy, Mom's crying.
Vince, Ian's friend from college built the ring. He and Ian sat down with a bag of diamonds, Ian plucked out three, a one carat and two 1/2 carats, and Vince made a ring of platinum to hold them.
Tell Ian I said congratulations!

Doesn't everybody do this?!
Seriously, tell him congrats!

That has to be one of the coolest DIY stories I've ever heard.
Big congrats to them of course!

Congrats

That's better than turning down a stainless steel nut and glueing some industrial diamonds on it.

Honest hon, it says right on the blade "Diamond Tipped"!
Aw, that's wonderful!
"Father of the Groom" has a nice ring to it. (And speaking of rings... )

Right over my head.....
Anything related to show up, shut up and wear beige?
Congrats. My wife got a $10 ring at Disney... Turned her finger funny colors, but it's what she wanted. Though, when I plunk down the big money with Keith and company, I have to get her a diamond.
Just married off my oldest daughter last weekend. I was in a rented tux for that, so was the father of the groom. Might want to hold out on buying the suit until the bride figures out how formal the wedding will be. They might want you in a tux, which can be rented (including shoes ). My son married a couple years ago and I had to buy a suit for that one since only the brides father was in a tux. My youngest daughter helped with the rings/other jewelry as she works in a jewelry store. I evaded the majority of the planning, everytime wedding plans were brought up I grabbed my keys and got in the Miata and left for a while. I just wrote the checks I was told too.
Congrats and good luck.

A.) She's from Long Island.
B.) When she graduated from college Daddy offered a big party at the Yacht Club, dinner, open bar OR the cash equivilent.
It was a really nice party. No such offer for when she gets her PhD. but you see where this is headed.
Poor Daddy won't be able to retire until he's 90.
So here's a hint about a suit, since you're an upstate ny guy.
some of the best suits in the US are made in rochester NY at Hickey Freeman. USA made, union labor. Good good quality. An average hickey suit will cost $1500-2000 in a store. Sometimes you can find them for 50% off of MSRP.
However, once or twice a year the factory has close out, blow out sales. You need to get on a mailing list for the timing(sometimes the sales are at the NYC store, but the sales are not generally as good).
typically you can get a hard wearing, fully canvassed suit, made in the USA for $300-500 or so at one of these blow out sales. I almost made the drive from SC to Rochester to purchase one a bit ago. The deals are that good.
However, this is all probably moot as you will be forced to rent the gear that your son specifies.

Luckily as the father of the groom you'll be left out of most of the planing. My sister is getting married in February and so far it's getting expensive very fast. One of the reasons we had our wedding up by my wife's family in Albany instead of down on LI.
If Ian is having alot of his wedding party travel he may want to look into getting the tuxes at Men's Warehouse. My brother did for his wedding since he had guys from upstate and Philly. Everyone gets fitted and picks up the suit at their local store, and after the wedding they can be returned anywhere. We got changed after the reception and left all the suits with his father in law who returned them the next morning.

Trust me, as the step-father of the bride you are left out of most of the planning as well. Except for the part that involves writing checks. Somehow they managed to include me in ALL of that!

BTDT. You WILL cry, just like the big softy that you are. I've married off two sons and a daughter, it's always a BIG DEAL, and then life goes on. Enjoy the moment, and then anticipate the grandchildren that are inevitable. I do.

Living in Rochester and wearing a suit 5 days a week I really ought to get on the sale list, or at least pay attention to when the sale is.
Back in topic, congrats on the soon-to-be new addition to the family, hopefully to be followed (when the time is right) by some more additions to the family!

Hickey has a store under the factory that you can go to and sometimes find deals out of the big sale.. but there is nothing like the big sale...
Do not go there on anything other than a bright sunny day, middle of the day. The factory is on ave D.
Thanks Wally, I may put the touch on you when it comes time to haul Grandparents, my five brothers, their wives, kiddies and assorted hangers on from Albany to L.I. We may rent your bus. They want to get married in a vinyard in the fall 2 - 3 years from now.
As far as suits, lets see what the prevailing wind is. Ian gets invited to an "invitation only" Hugo Boss sale every year, maybe he can set me up.
Thanks for the support guys.

Oh, I know where the factory is, nasty neighborhood. In my job I go to all areas of the city, mostly the really bad ones, but usually the natives either mistake me for the police or correctly see me as an attorney likely to help their neighbors get some money so I don't get harassed.
