I have a story to tell about why I do post like this. A little over 20 years ago I was living in upstate SC and a hurricane was heading towards Charleston where my mom lived. I called her the day before it was going to hit and asked her what she was doing to prepare for it. Her response was "what hurricane?"
So are you guys ready? I know Pete is on the Mississippi Gulf Coast but anyone else?
That happened to me with Hurricane Frederic in '79.
I'm not near the "point of impact," but I first heard about Ida yesterday while I was working out at the Y. They have a bunch of TV's up on the walls, and I looked up and said something like "oh, look. A hurricane." Then when the map showing where it would make landfall came up, I was like "huh, where is that?" The coast was an east-west line instead of a north-south line, so I got back to lifting.
A former co-worker of mine mentioned wanting to get together last night as he's moving to NOLA this weekend. I prompted told him, no the berkeley you are not. He laughed. I told him, seriously, have you checked the weather? He's never encountered anything more than remnants of a tropical system that made landfill 300 miles away. Needless to say he's now waiting 3 weeks to make the move (dependant upon how things go)

If this thing is anywhere near a Cat-4 there won't be much of Nola left. Seriously. Everyone remembers the damage from Katrina, but Nola was on the back side of that storm. If it stays on track & they're in the northeast quadrant, it's going to be really really bad.
It's nice & calm here now, with some occasional rain. I'm going to board up the windows & hopefully mow the lawn in a bit. With the current track we'll be fine here, but we're also prepared to bug-out if it heads more easterly. We're at 20' elevation, on the back side of a ridge, and surrounded by live oaks. So we're pretty sheltered here.
I just talked to Aeromoto, he's about 15-miles west of me - so closer to the storm, but still not in harms way based on its present track. He doesn't have the elevation we have, but the RR tracks function as a levee & he's on the north side of them, and much further from shore than us.

Ratchet down the palms and load the torties into the RV!
Then pick this up in NY and tow it back south once things clear out.
In reply to captdownshift (Forum Supporter) :
That's rad!
In reply to Pete Gossett (Forum Supporter) :
How does it feel to be ignored as if your state doesn't even exist?
Hurricane Ida could bring extensive power outages to Louisiana and Alabama
This looks like some fun traffic.

We're used to it. I've heard the tales from Katrina how The Weather Channel & other news outlets kept referring to us as "the landmass between New Orleans and Mobile".
In reply to KyAllroad :
Yeah I-10 is at a standstill north of us, and parts of Hwy-90 are too, but part of that is probably just Saturday evening traffic.
Waze is pretty good about showing traffic speeds(as long as there's at least one Wazer on the route), and so far all the secondary & backroads are fine. So if we have to bug out - which fortunately at this point seems highly unlikely - we'll just head north on the back roads about 20-miles before heading east.
I am in the Jackson area and picked up some supplies today. The lines at some of the gas stations are crazy. Forecasts are saying 50 mile per hour winds and 5-10 inches of rain going into Monday.

I'm afraid you guys may get it worse then we will in Biloxi. You're more in the path & there often seems to be tornadoes once the storms get inland.
Not looking good. Hopefully people got out but there's always the ones that can't. Thinking of them today.

You aren't kidding. I entered " Biloxi hurricane" into Google and the top ten stories didn't even mention Mississippi.
Hurricanes are crazy, stay safe everyone.

I was talking with a friend about it, he mentioned that he had heard stories that they couldn't evac hospitals because there's no place to put anyone due to everything being full from COVID. I hadn't even thought about that aspect of it. Things are gonna be bad.
My sister and her husband are riding it out in SE Nola. West Bank, Belle Chasse, specifically English Turn Country Club neighborhood.
Their daughter is an employee of Tulane University Hospital and is locked down in the facility. It's a generally safe place to be with lots of resources. Her father was on staff at the same hospital when Katrina hit.
My most recent picture with my sister taken from the upper deck at NOLA Track while passing through town on One Lap 2018.
She was supposed to be come here, north on Sept 10th???
My wedding is supposed to be Sept 4th in New Orleans

Mother Nature trying to tell you something? Just saying.
In reply to John Welsh :
I hope they're ok. I will say that the weather channel footage doesn't show nearly as much damage or flooding as I expected, but I've also not seen anything from the West Bank.
Some raw video, tornado at 5 minutes or so.
