A "10" is a reference to someone whose physical attractiveness is at the top end of a 1-10 scale. Given that humans are generally distributed along a bell curve most are 4,5, and 6. Fewer are 2,3,7, or 8. The truly attractive and completely repellent are out there and generally noteworthy when you see them. Their looks usually cause people to stare as they are so far (2 standard deviations) from the "norm" that most of us have to acknowledge them.
Interestingly the "2 point rule" generally applies as well. i.e. you will see a 5 with a 7 and not think anything of it, but if you see a 3 with a 9 it looks "off". (money often substitutes for physical attractiveness, hence women thinking Bill Gates is the hottest man alive)

Plenty of instances in history of royalty who were probably gay, and still married and produced heirs. You don't have to really be motivated to have sex with a person to still be able to perform royal duties.
What could be very interesting and highly plausible is that the king did produce 1 or 2 legitimate male heirs, and they die. Circumstances can be suspect or not. Maybe legitimate son/heir and oldest illegitimate son go off to fight battle/war together. Legitimate son is killed in battle, and the illegitimate son takes up the banner and leads the soldiers to victory. Turns out to be the better officer, and the military likes him better.
