This isn't one of those nightmare stories. Here goes.
9 years ago when we moved in here I wanted to put up a chain link fence. I talked to the neighbors on each side to see if they had any issues, or wanted to be involved. Neither wanted to be involved and had no problem. The fence went up, and if I don't mind saying so, looks great. So today I get a knock on the door. It's a contractor my neighbor to the north hired to put in a privacy fence. As a side note, it could be my propensity for sunning my hairy belly and my furry conventions that prompted this (I keed, I keed). Anyway. The contractor says he can put the privacy fence next to my chain link, or pull the chain link up and put the privacy fence in it's place. My first reaction was "just pull it up. No sense in having two fences. Two fences would look goofy, and there'd be grass growing betwixt the fences that couldn't be trimmed.
Anyway, that got me thinking. He's putting up a PVC fence, 6'. What if he puts up a crap-tastic quality fence and 5 years from now it looks craptastic? Do I just sit back and hope it's a good quality fence? Do they even make a high-quality PVC fence? I can't offer to help pay for it, it's going in now.
Would you have them leave the chain link up? Sorry, long and rambling, I know.

TLDR: Star Wars is much better than Star Trek

Id pull the chain lunk if its redundant. That way you can maintain your side of the white fence and grass. Got to look good to you. Who gives a berk what his side looks like.

The pvc will need annual pressure washing, if the stuff at a group home i work at is any indication.

I'd pull the chain out. You're going to look at it anyhow, so may as well be able to have it look nice.

Pull it, but keep it.

i'd ask him to provide an 8' section of the fencing going in as an example prior to your decision being made.

Neighbor put in a six foot white PVC - I hate it but really there is nothing bad about it. When we have dry summers the sun reflects off it and a strip goes dormant earlier than the rest of the lawn I don't water.

My Toro bumped the post and has left some black skid marks on it. FREE fence for me.

I see no reason you can't ask info on the fence itself. Though if you're not kicking in, your concerns are moot.

Sun glare is a real problem with plastic fence, but a coat of paint on your side can take care of that.

Long term herbicide will keep things from growing between this fence and yours, should you keep yours. Painting would be more different though.

Take down yours and your at the mercy of your neighbor for backyard security. With your own fence, you control your security.

First of all, what a cool contractor/neighbor! Ask for a sample and then if it as at all OK, take yours down. There are a few houses in my neighborhood with a no-mans-land between two fences and it is always full of weeds or trash.
