Working like a mad man the past 2 years, my daughter's senior year then dropping her off at college 2 days ago, in the middle of a kitchen remodel.............out of the blue I bought tickets to see The Beach Boys with John Stamos.  The wife has been a fan of Stamos since the 1980's or whenever he was on that soap opera.

It's raining and we are headed to an outdoor park (Ravinia) for the show.  What the heck - I've been a Beach Boys fans since the late 1970's - this might be fun!

Besides the car songs this one is my favorite.

...with John Stamos?  indecision  That's odd.  Does he sing with them?

I saw the Beach Boys many years ago on a double header with Chicago, it was a pretty good concert.

My dad grew up in southern California in the 50s and 60s, therefore I listened to The Beach Boys A LOT while growing up. I would go.

Good Vibrations is one of my favorites songs.

Way long time ago when I was in my early 20s my dad gave me brother and I tickets to the Beach Boys.  I was like what the berk that's for old people like my dad.  Now that I think about it he was younger than I am now.  Anyway one of the best concerts I've been too.

Accidentally stumbled into a Beach boys show in Erie maybe 15 years ago. I was under 21 at least, not that it made a difference.

We were up for our annual fishing trip and went into town and a tour bus pulled up and they started doing a street show.

I was maybe 12 when my Dad and I were at the ex (CNE - think local fair but for a city of 2million) and as we walked by the bandstand the ticket takers were leaving their post to break up a fight between one of their own and some crazy looking dude.  My Dad, always quick thinking said, let's go, as we walked through the turnstiles, into the 20k seat venue and sat down on the steps to see who was playing. It was the Beach boys and it was a pretty good show.

A few years later I was there with my best buddy and in almost exactly the same spot an older woman approached us with a sob story. Her and her daughter were supposed to go but the daughter couldn't make the concert and she really didn't want to see the tickets go to waste. I don't remember what we paid but it couldn't have been more than a couple bucks. Who was playing? The Beach boys.

Wasn't John Stamos uncle Jesse on Full House?  Why the heck would he be touring with The Beach Boys?

A quick check at IMDB says he's a drummer and sometimes plays for The Beach Boys.

TIL.

Having grown up watching Full House there was at least one episode featuring The Beach Boys.

I did a little looking too, he's been performing with them since the late 1980s (he was in the music video for 'Kokomo'.)  Learn something new every day, I guess.

I still don't know what the person that wrote that song was on when they decided to write about a E36 M3ty midwestern dump whose only valuable asset is a Chrysler transmission plant and make it sounds like a tropical destination.

They also showed up in Home Improvement. In that episode Wilson is related to one of them.

It'll be a fun concert, I'm a big fan of the music, but there'll only be a couple of Beach Boys there. Mike Love, Bruce Johnston and maybe David Marks and a bunch of studio musicians. Some of the vocals are actually done by sons of some of the founding members and a guy from the Fendertones (I forget his name). If you're a Beach Boy fan and use Facebook, look up the Fendertones page and watch their videos. It will give you an appreciation of how complex Brian Wilson's productions really were when you see how much effort it takes the Fendertones to replica the same sound.

I saw them at the IL state fair back in the mid-90's. It wasn't a band I particularly wanted to see, but like others have said it was good. I think most of the original members were still with them at that point. America opened for them though, and I really dig those guys.

I went to see the Beach Boys in "88 as a 17 year old and was horrified to see all the "old" berkers blowing up condoms and bouncing them through the air at each other. Now I view this as the middle finger to death and ageing it was.  Good show.

I knew going in it was the "Mike Love" show and he did rely on the younger guys for the higher notes.  My review in general:

1. Minus the intermission it was a solid 2.25 hours of music.  Not a lot of chatter from Mike Love - just music.

2. It was all Mike Love but the younger guys and his son did a great job.  I enjoyed how good these guys are.  John Cowsill is the drummer - I thought that was cool.

3. Video - the large video production was impressive.  Somebody put together a lot of old movies and matched them to the songs - pretty nostalgic to see them.

4. Ravinia is a unique place to see or hear a concert.  There is a covered pavilion with reserved seats or you can bring all the food, wine, and beer you want in your wagon and sit and "listen" to the concert in a woodsy outdoor atmosphere.  The tables, chairs, candles, cheese trays and wine glasses folks bring are pretty cool.    https://www.ravinia.org/

5. Overall it has been a busy year and my wife and I really needed to get out and have a fun night.

6. Stamos?  He's a great drummer and guitar player with a great personality.   Yeah, watch those old Full House Beach Boys episodes.

7. One more - at age 58 we were kinda the younger people at the show but it's hard to gauge as Ravinia sells a lot of season tickets to the rich north suburban Chicago old folks.

I went to a Brian Wilson show years ago in the Detroit area. They asked the crowd their ages. I was surprised at the number of younger people there. To be fair, they were there with their parents or grandparents, but they clearly enjoyed the timeless music. My grandsons will know the Beach Boys music, I'll see to it. Glad you and your wife enjoyed yourselves.

Edit: If you look at Fendertones videos you'll see John Cowsill in them playing drums and doing vocals.

John Cowsill, as in The Cowsills family band from the 1960s?  That's interesting.

I saw the Beach Boys (with Stamos) in 2008 at a Shriner convention. They put on a good show, they had a gang of stand in professionals that seemed to do the musical heavy lifting leaving the originals to just have fun with the crowd. I was in my early 30's and being a Shriner convention the average age was well into retirement so it was fun to see the older folks rocking out to their childhood favorites.  Fast forward 13 years and I am closer to the older folks. I wonder if Live or some band like that will be playing when I am 65 and I will be thrown back to my 20's!
