I start my healthcare debate from a very difficult to understand position. We should begin with a doctor performing a needed service for a price and I start laying down money.

I often hear a gasp from those who cannot fathom this. This is the basic transaction we are trying to perform. How this function is carried out is what this debate is about. On one side is costs of services. Costs have exploded as better care is available in new techniques, costly equiptment, new drugs, insurance and MANY other things that made health care today vastly more expensive. In many ways the costs are justified, but there are quite a lot of legal and illegal pillaging of the system.

Then we have delivery of the money for these services. Cash on the table is impossible due to the personal debt environment of America today. Insurance, Co-ops, Medicare, Medicade and Health Savings account are adopted to buffer these costs. The sad part of this is that money in is always more than money out. Properly managed, this is an acceptable solution.

I currently believe that our Federal Government lacks the means to properly manage our health care system.

Insurance and HMOs are past this point also. My personal attitude was partially formed when my mother was rushed to the hospital for an (apparant) heart attack. The doctor related that the dictates of her insurance listed her symptoms as a high percentage of being a duodemic ulcer. That was what he was allowed to test and treat her for. My pleas that I would pay cash for him to check for a heart problem were stonewalled and she was released. Luckily(!!??) as she was getting up from the table, she suffered another heart attack. She then met the criteria for having her heart checked. Another fellow had a similar situation and unluckily (!!??) had his second attack while driving at 70 mph and killed 3 people. I was almost on the jury for this case.

I just wonder if there was some fellow that calculated that the lawsuit cost would be less than the testing cost for this situation. We are not Ford Pintos folks!!
