I have an antique walking stick/cane that has been in the family for (as the story goes) 5 generations.  Supposedly, my great-great grandfather bought it for my great grandfather when he turned 16, but family stories are sometimes exaggerated... especially in my family.  My grandfather also claimed (jokingly) that he invented the Metaphor.

Not looking for a value, just trying to see if anyone knows its provenance, manufacturer/artisan, origin, approximate year, etc.

If the family story is true, great grandpa would have turned 16 in 1900 or 1901, but I have no idea if it was bought new or was already an antique.  The metal appears to be brass.  The shaft is wood and is a scabbard for a sword concealed inside.  The collar appears to be real ivory, but for the sake of my tree-hugging sanity, I'll call it something else.

I'm absolutely zero help whatsoever.

But that's a cool piece.

Cool. It's got a very "British soldier returning from India" feel but I have no idea how old it really could be. Watch out for those concealed weapons charges.

I do have a weapons permit, (starter pistols and swords at the theater) but I certainly don't plan on carrying it around.  I was just digging through the safe at dad's and re-discovered it.

some of the antique appraisers are really good at identifying the object and it's history.

That's cool. I have my great grandfather's cane but there is no sword inside that I have been able to find.

In reply to johndej :

That is definitely just like mine.  The carvings are a wee bit different, but the construction is identical.
