Depends on where you live. Vanity plates are $10 a year in VA. I probably went through 4 different vanity plates on one of my previous cars.

I like vanity plates.  I just can't get them in the non-renewal-needed antique auto tags I put on everything I own that's old enough.

Vanity plates can be fun and light hearted.

I just applied for the available plate of VTEC Y0 for my NSX.

My Suburban 2500 has the plate of CNYNARO for this:

Well now with all these great suggestions I might just have to do it after all. Submit more ideas, I'll pick the one I like best and when I get to the DMV monday, I'll flip a coin on whether or not I use it.

The question is this:

Vanity plates? or no?

Always.

Makes it easier to find your car if you have an appliance.  Another interesting bit of trivia.  I vaguely noticed that when driving at night and a state trooper comes up behind, they don't hang back and run my plate like they're not supposed to, for my cars with vanity plates.  Later, we got a computer setup at work where all we have to do is enter a car's license plate to the work order and the VIN, owner's name/address, and CARFAX history pop up automatically.  It doesn't work for personalized plates.  So this is probably why.

That, and it's only $50/year extra here so why not?

(Trivia:  I have seen REDSUNS and OVR 9000.  The first is on a late model Civic, the second is on an early 2000s Corolla.  And every variant of "Trogdor" or "burninator" I can think of is taken.  I love Ohio.)

MzdaFce is the best I can come up with. Browsing the Texas specialty place website shows some plates with 7 digits.

So, after watching a documentary about the rise and fall of the English automotive industry, I had a compulsion to see what stuff I could find on eBay for the Buick/Rover V8.

You know how eBay will offer related search terms?  Searching for "Rover 3.5l engine" recommended a search for "camero3.4 engine".  (Exactly like that, with the missing space)

General rule for the two things I find completely tacky on vanity plates:

Driver's/Owner's Name
What kind of car it is (or obvious stats on the engine).

So like... BOBSM3 on an M3 is completely tacky.

It's okay if you're using the car name to make fun of the car though.

I had been thinking "CEASFRE" myself and then I saw you beat me to it.

Corvette That Guy generally has Corvette T-shirts, Corvette hats, a Corvette jacket, Corvette underwear, and no Corvette sense of humor. He would never think of getting a vanity plate making fun of your own fuel injection, or wearing a "Cease Fire Injection" T-shirt where one of the flags on a Corvette logo has been replaced with a white flag of surrender. The central fact of Corvette That Guy life is taking Corvettes far too seriously.

So. Apparently in Utah it costs $60 up front and $10 extra each year for vanity plates. And being the cheap bastard I am I didn't buy in.

Also vintage vehicle plates are available if the car is over 30 years old but it doesn't affect registration costs unless it is over 40 years old.

Standard plates for me today please.

You know what happens if you drive a corvette in the rain?

When it dries, it shrinks into a miata.

Tough crowd ---- picking on Corvette guys.   I suppose none of you wear flat-brim hats like the Subaru  / VW vape gang, and of course none of you would ever put a big wing, or fart can on any of your cars.....ever.   None of you ever wear Nissan, Honda, or BMW apparel to show your automotive loyalty---- I mean, that would be tacky....right?

Every car has it's stereotypes, and every type of car has good people who are fans.  I'm as guilty as the rest, but I'm trying to be more open.  Last year's Mitty really did it for me.  The featured marque was Porsche, and I was dreading it.  I had dealt with too many P-car douchebags over the years.  The idea of catering to them all weekend made me mighty uneasy.  Turns out......the Porsche D-bags that we all know and hate don't come to events--- not at least the Mitty.   Nearly every P-car attendee was super cool, enthusiastic  and friendly.  The porcupine joke just didn't apply, and I felt bad afterwards for pre-judging that crowd.

I feel the same way about the Corvette guys.   Sure some of them may be 100 lbs overweight, riding around on their Rascals with Corvette gear from head to toe, but there are a ton of cool Corvette owners out there.   When JG built his last C5--- he ran into all kinds of cool folks at the Corvette club meetings.

To the outside world, chasing cones around a parking lot is every bit as foolish as sitting on a lawn chair at a car show.  We shouldn't be so quick to judge.........

As far as vanity plates---- do whatever makes you happy.   I'm not usually one to go for them, but my buddy's Dad had  RELAX for his plate......thought that was kinda cool.

Georgia plate fees have always kept me from going for the vanity plate, but I like them if done right. I always wanted the tag QKSLVR on my silver mustang. I saw a jeep somewhere with OIIIIO as the DMV issued plate. Pretty cool.

Er... I thought Chevy themselves was making fun of the fuel injection?  At least, I have never heard of "crossfire" being considered a GOOD thing.

Maybe if they called it "Friendlyfire" injection?  That can't be bad, it says friendly right in the name!

Ohio gets you $50 *every* year.  Just because, I guess.  The plates are yours until you want them replaced, and they print off the registration stickers right there at the BMV when you renew them.

OTOH, this means that annual registration on OKTAVIA and NT A QTRO were $105 a year and not $55 per year.  I understand that a lot of people would love to have annual registration that cheap.  So I don't mind it one bit.

(still kind of want a Passat W8, dang it, but VW discontinued many of the W8 specific deep-maintenance parts)

I had settled on a plate but hadn't checked availability so it might have been taken already. SID or S1D or SIDD. Like the sloth that nobody likes in Ice Age, my boy's favorite movie lately. Thought maybe it could double as a name for the car... It is dirty and slow. Also cross-eyed (I really need to aim the headlights properly)

I hope I didn't offend anybody by picking on corvette guys. I like the cars. I wouldn't want to be a "Harley Guy" either but I like the bikes.

Maybe I just have some fear of becoming a cultural stereotype... But I am a car enthusiast and have some level of appreciation for most "enthusiast" cars even if I wouldn't own them and everybody  know that does is some flavor of shiny happy person.

Maybe I rethink the plates in a couple years when the car hits 40 and vintage plates are cheap enough for me to justify the extra cost to my wife.
