Ok, so I am a little concerned- I looked up the results, and the only person who has the same last name is Hugh. Which isn't remotely the same as Pat, but the location and age is what I recall.

If that is AC- he finished in 4:44.

I noticed the name as well, the age is right.

I worked in the medical tent at the finish line of the Boston marathon for a couple of years. Some of the runners need quite a bit of recovery time before they can resume their normal activities.

yep, that's me. first name is Hugh, middle name is Patrick and that's what i've used all my life. bib number 5968. 4hr 44min 40sec. if i had known at the time, and if i had been capable of rational thought at the time, i would've waited 4 sec to cross the finish line.

the wall. ah yes, the wall. i said berkeley the wall, it does not apply to me.

i was wrong. it does apply to me, but not in the way i expected. i have had gigantic calorie bonks on long bike rides, and i know what that feels like. this was different. it was more mental than physical for sure. having a killer playlist on my ipod was a huge help, and seeing other people struggling worse than me also helped me keep moving. i may be passing for 2,446th place, but it's still a pass!

i placed 218th out of 319 in my gender/age group (Male 45 - 49), and overall 2446th out of 4291.

you can see full results at:

detroit marathon timing

and search for me by bib number 5968.

as i crossed the finish and looked at all the people handing out the medals, i just kept walking. last medal distributor guy taps me on my shoulder and says "hey buddy, don't you want your medal?" oh yeah, sure, i kinda forgot about that. thanks. then a girl walks up with a solar blanket and a bottle of water, and says "are you OK?" i said yes, and she said "are you sure?" and i said "Nope!" i drank the bottle and wrapped up in the blanket and became aware that my family was shouting my name from the side of the finishers' chute. it was cool to see them there.

i didn't carry my own water bottle, and while i drank at least one cup of water or gatorade at every fluid station, i still got dehydrated. i peed at 5:15 AM, then not again until 5:30 PM.

i also probably should've taken in more calories during the run. i consumed two honey stinger gold gels, one pack of shot bloks, one and a half honey stinger waffles, and five "salt stick" electrolyte caps. at the finish, i still had three gels and another pack of shot bloks with me.

as soon as i stopped moving after the finish, i had some stomach cramps that nearly doubled me over. then a few minutes later i started farting, and the stench was berkeleying hideous! there was a serious chem lab going on in my belly. good thing we were outdoors, because my ass was violating all kinds of UN treaties. hans brix would've been all over me.

Are you going up and down stairs on your rear? I remember Ines had horrible leg problems until Thursday. She could barely climb stairs.

that had me laughing out loud ... been there do that ... thought something was wrong with me ...(well besides what's obvious LOL)

mine wasn't a "full marathon" ... it was (the race is no more) called Shut In Ridge Trail Run ... paralleled the Blue Ridge Parkway from the French Broad River to the parking lot atop Mt. Pisgah ... 17 mi. that gained ~ 3000' ... was supposed to approximate what you'd do on a somewhat flat marathon ..

some 15 min. after the finish is when the stomach cramps and the flatulence started ... it was so bad I couldn't stand myself

huge props to you for your race .....

Somehow missed this thread yesterday and this morning.. thanks for the link from the other one!

Congrats, gotta be great getting out there and doing it after all that training. Amazing.

This week puts my training right where you started the thread. I have to say I can't imagine running TWICE that far after doing a half at training pace yesterday.

Ines is a girl. my hams and my hips are a little sore, but i've been up and down a few flights of stairs (on my feet, facing my direction of travel) without issue. i even took the dog for a walk this morning.

in reply to nocones: I opted for three small bags of Fritos, a banana, a slice of cheese pizza, and a can of Coke. i think the Coke was probably the most important part of my recovery. when i got home, i called my favorite Thai place and got a dinner portion of Panang Curry. after that, i was tempted to get a Royale with cheese, but i resisted.

Well, if you are going to be that way- she beat you by 20 min, and that's with walking that last 2 miles.

And another one- if you are ok today, you didn't run hard enough.

Still, it's good to hear that the recovery from the wall was not too bad. The few half's i've done, just getting SOMETHING TO EAT changed me a lot. I think I downed a half a pizza at the finish line once.

Great job AC! What an accomplishment!

My knees stopped me from going down this road about ten years ago. Now I'm trying to get into mountain biking.

I have a coworker that ran it to- I think he finished close to your time.
