so we're gonna sue Lowes..
one of the stupidest lawsuits in the history of evar..
just wait until someone buys a "1.5 X 3.5" piece of lumber and it actually measures at 1.7 X 3.4... that's when E36 M3's gonna get real...

I can see SOME validity in wanted them to show true dimensions (for the truly clueless)...
...but fining them is RIDICULOUS. Those dimensions are used, and have been used for the history of lumber!
(I believe the disparity in those dimensions is that those are the untrimmed/unfinished size of the boards. More appropriate for the saw mill then the lumber yard)
I'm glad that this was the largest problem facing California.
I heard they solved their drought by passing a law requiring a certain amount of rainfall each year.
I hope the next suit he files is more worthwhile. Like maybe for damage to body parts from a poorly labeled chainsaw.

You are correct, sir! go to a lumberyard and ask for a 8/4 thick board (8 quarters = 2 inches) and it will be 2 inches, but it will also be all saw marked and splintery. Plane it down to 1.5 and it'll be just fine.
OTOH, the disparity grows as the number goes up- 2=1.5, but 10=9.25, so it's not all planing it smooth. Still, the numbers have been that way for DECADES. Take a tape measure so you know what you get. You can just grab one off the shelf there, measure stuff, then put the tape measure back. They don't care.
The reason the US has not switched to the metric system is the lumber industry.
How do you convert a 2 x 4 to metric when it doesnt even measure 2" x 4".
As is customary in the industry if you want dimensional lumber you have to specify DIMENSIONAL.
Even plywood, if you ask for 1/2" you will get 15/32".
It's all a lie!
New and improved!
I really wish the globe went metric. Its so much easier. I mean most new "american made" cars even use metric fasteners
Dumb judge said: Especially when misinformation could adversely affect building projects that more often than not rely on precise measurements.
Better stop building with those damned imprecise trees.
Maybe the real problem is that Lowes is encouraging idiots to build.

Hey don't mess with him bro'. I may hire him to sue on my behalf over the term "board foot".

actually the article states the suit was brought upon them by a district attorney, not on behalf of any consumer. it was a money grab by the gubmint as 90% of the money went to a "civil penalty"
The really funny part? The Forest Service and the Feds set the standards they are bitching about. Go to page 23:

I hate the metric system. It's vulgar and should only be spoken of in hushed tones. You are on the verge of being labelled a Canadian...

i wonder if the judge in the case was ever shown that?
Hey we Canadians still use imperial for dimensional lumber. That lawsuit is like the whole "pizza is a vegetable" thing a couple years ago.
Just wait till these guys find out they've been shorting us on plywood too, "3/4" plywood is 23/32 now.
I'm kinda surprised they didn't sue em over how you cant find a reasonably straight, knot free, straight grained 2x4 anymore. Maybe I can profit off that one.
Wait, the judge said anything other than "Get the hell out of my courtroom, you moron, and don't ever let me see your face inside here again"?!
How can the people make sure that judge and D.A. Never are able to practice their profession ever again. They should immediately be forced to resign. This level of stupidity should be severally punished.
In reply to Nick_Comstock:
Similar to North Korea, taking back California from the idiots in charge of the place would be such a E36 M3show its not worth it.

the straight lumber is in the middle of the unit, towards the bottom.
