Rebuilding the motor in my Neon had me looking for a machine shop. Called in October and they were busy but if I was willing to wait fine. Got the call at the end of February and the bottom end rebuild was done, the flywheel machined, and the valves done. Pay the bill and reassemble.
Motor is in the car and runs fine but leaks oil and we diagnose rear main seal. Out comes the transmission and no rear main seal. Both I and my partner presumed that rear main was part of the bottom end rebuild and so didn't check. Our bad.
Trans is back in the car but it appear the rear main is still leaking. Out comes the trans again and the FelPro rear main is leaking a little. This is part of the engine rebuild kit that was purchased by the machine shop and delivered to us. (Which makes the aforementioned oversight even worse.) Replaced with Mopar rear main.
Ok. We've fixed it. No. Still leaking oil. From the rear main seal. Pull the trans again and see that the flywheel is dry. It's not the rear main. It's the oil galley expansion plug . . . that was installed as part of the bottom end rebuild by the machine shop.
So now that we've diagnosed and fixed it, do we have recourse with the machine shop? Should we expect anything? Do we have a reasonable position to ask? Or are these things that happen and can't really be blamed or supported by the machine shop?
