Why would my home AC stop producing cold air? It's about six years old, and the unit starts and runs. There is a new filter in the furnace. I wouldn't mind some troubleshooting before I call in an expert. Any thoughts?

Is the indoor coil frozen? Is air coming out of the vents? Are you sure the compressor is running outside?

Yeah, just because the fan in the outside unit is spinning doesn't mean the compressor hasn't seized.

I'm not sure about anything . . .

Those are all good leads to track down.

I recently had this problem. The blower in the furnace was working, so air would blow out of the vents, but the fan in the unit outside had failed. No cold air entering the ductwork. Apparently mice chewed up some of the wiring inside the unit outside. I paid my buddy about $250.

Didn't know they had A/C in Canada!

If the pipes are frozen at all...it's low on coolant.

If the outside unit is making a serious racket when you turn it off, then on...the compressor is shot.

If you install a new thermostat and do it wrong...you can burn up the relay from the house to the outside unit.

I am not an HVAC repairmen.

Did you check the gas pressures? If it loses pressure it will appear to be working normally, you just won't get any cold air.

Also anyone who thinks they don't have AC in Canada hasn't been there in the summer
