Nine or so football fields.

That's how long the world's largest known beaver dam is.

It's so big, in fact, that it was first found in 2007 with the help of Google Earth. In other words, it can be seen from space.

And now, as Canada's CBS News reports, "British and American media are buzzing" about the dam, which is "on the southern edge of Wood Buffalo National Park" in northern Alberta.

Dan Karpenchuk reports for the NPR newscast that "it's believed several beaver families joined forces to create the massive dam, which must have taken years to complete." He also says the dam is in an almost inaccessible part of the part, which may help explain why the beavers like that spot so much and have and enough time to make the dam so big.

According to CBC, "the previously reported largest beaver dam" is in Three Forks, Mont. It stretches about 2,100 feet.

Well ok, but anyone who's ever been involved with beaver trapping knows beavers will build communal dams and they get massive. I don't know if any of the ones I've seen were that long, but a whole lot of them are so long I've no idea where they started or ended. They just went on and on and on.

Nine or so football fields.

Is that 9 US football fields or 9 Canadian football fields?
