I've seen older rigs like that advertised for similar money out here so I don't think it's a fluke.
I guess it's a combination of limited markets (don't you need a CDL or at least the appropriate endorsement for them) and the fact that 99% of potential buyers want something they can earn money with, so they'd rather spend a little more than buying a headache.
The older ones are just real cheap. I've been looking at one locally for 3500. I have no need for it, I just think they're cool.
Edit: this is the one I like in my area....they just dropped it to 3k. http://nashville.craigslist.org/cto/1919161504.html
It's a cabover for cryin out loud nobody uses these anymore, but it does have a sleeper........spent many nights sleeping in the back on one of those.
I must have watched too much BJ and the Bear as a child 'cause I think these are kinda cool... but what to do with one?
In reply to 914Driver:
I don't have one either, but I do have a little bit of land. I figure I'd just drive it around the field honking the horn....and maybe use it as a way overkill field truck to move trailers around etc. It would be fun to have around.
You know I believe that there is a way to register a semi as an RV and build yourself an ultimate ZAV.
The BJ and the Bear KW was a K100 Aerodyne, had the cool "vista cruiser" -esque windows and a higher roof.
These mainly go for export, still in use pretty much everywhere but here.

a good friend was very close to doing that. wife put the kabosh on it though close to actually following through.

I remember reading somewhere that cab-over tractors were the result of tractor-trailer overall length regulations. When these regulations were repealed (sometime during the 80's?), everyone went to conventional designs since they ride better.

IIRC, they ceased production of cab over semi's (US) in '98...maybe '99. Good move safey wise, as the driver is the crumple zone.
I can't remember the last time I saw a front-engine truck in Europe. Cab overs are still standard everywhere.
Cabover makes it worth less. It being old also contributes.
I remember seeing a long wheelbase OTR Volvo with a big sleeper go for $10K. That was about the time I decided that at some point I am destined to build my own toter.

Professor lot lizard?
step 1 buy the cabover
step 2 buy a pickup truck
step 3 mount pickup cab and front end on semi frame
step 4 build flatbed
step 5 who cares you just built a pickup truck on a semi chassis, and are now awesome and can tow anything you want.
