I have a box of VHS movies--some are even new and never opened. What's the best way to get rid of them? Is there some kind of VHS fan club movement out there? Thrift store? Or just haul them to the curb?

Garbage pickup is tomorrow.

Good question. I have a crap load of them too. Some pretty cool stuff, actually, but I can probably download most of it and have it take up zero physical space.

Return them to the video rental store.

I like that.

No, seriously, there's some great stuff in the box: Bullitt, Grand Prix, Spies Like Us, Austin Powers. Several are unopened, too. I'm guessing we got these right when DVDs were ramping up.

My mother donated over 3000 to the local library. at least you can get a tax deduction.

The wisdom of this idea may be questionable if they are X rated.

If you are just looking to dump them, I might be interested. Are they kid appropriate? How many are you talking about?

Amazon/EBay. We just sold some Power Ranger VHS tapes for more than I expected. Or you can wait until you have a yard sale and throw them in a .50 box. I also learned that the movies that I thought would bring in the most coin were practically worthless. We have about 20 Disney VHS's that are selling for $.01 + shipping.

A stereo VCR makes a nice cheap analog deck to master music onto. Maybe you should hang onto them for demos?

Local record and video exchange.

We have one locally that gives store credit, but I think its like $0.25 per video. They sell for 25 cents to a dollar (depending on video, Disney stuff is usually higher)

I still use VHS, because I have working VCRs and they are stupid cheap.

Our library won't take them, or DVDs either. We donated our to Goodwill.

Some of those movies were released with different soundtracks on VHS and on DVD. Might want to check before you get rid of them. I think Gone in 60 Seconds (the original) was one of those.

If it's a bunch of kiddie movies or Disney, drop them off at a local library.

If it's home made porn, rip the tape out of the plastic container, slip it between tow flaps of manila and feed it into a Government Class IV Top Secret or better shredder.

Know what, mail 'em to me and I can take care of that for ya David.

Welcome.

eBay that shizz. Some of the VHS versions are better than the DVD stuff, which tends to get remastered into crapitude. Prime example: Gone in 60 Seconds. You want to see the VHS version.

My DVD version of The Terminator also has a fudged-up audio track, but at least with that one you have the option of getting the original theatrical soundtrack. (Mainly, the gunshots sound more badass)

Half.com might be easier than eBay. More oriented towards media.

This.... I have slowly been giving mine to Goodwill as I replace them with bargain rack DVDs.
