C. Shotguns have a psychological intimidation factor working for them, bad guys want NOTHING to do with someone who just racked the slide (even if you only loaded bird shot).
This is John Wayne movie stuff. Shotgun, pistol, antique musket... you'd be a damn fool giving your position away by making noise. If you committed to bringing out the weapon then the first sound an intruder should hear is BANG! If you get lucky and he doesn't die right away you can recite the speech you rehearsed just for such an occasion. You know, the one you recite while racking that shotgun in the mirror.

Theres loaded .30carbine mags stashed all over my house just in case as thats my preferred weapon. Plenty of power, accurate, rapid firing, and I know it inside/out.
Well guys, I'm not all that eager to end someone else's life. If necessary, I will in a second but I'd rather not have to. Having been in combat I can tell you that violent death is hard on everyone involved, so yeah. I would just as soon give an intruder every opportunity to give up non violently.
And Yamaha "mags stashed all over"? How many bad guys do you think are coming in?
With about 5 minutes of practice, I have no issues maneuvering my 18" H&R Pardner Pump (Norinco "Hawk Industries") riot gun through my bedroom hallway, in a apartment built in the late 20s(kinda narrow). Try it some time, close all the blinds when nobody else is home and practice clearing your house.
WRT to the whole racking a shotgun sound deal, I'm notoriously bad at leaving safeties on, wide awake, so my bedside shotgun is kept with 5 rds of 2 3/4" #4 buck in the tube, empty chamber, hammer down, safety off. This way, god forbid I'm woken up at 3 AM and need to use the thing, when I pick it up I'll be reminded by the floppy pump when I pick it up to rack it and be good to go. I don't give a berkeley either way if an intruder knows they're being hunted.

Well, we've had home invasions of 5+ intruders around here, and you never know if you'll need them.

For HD I have a model 12 with a 19 inch barrel loaded with 00. Just hold trigger and rack slide.

Nah, its the druggies thinking safety in numbers while out in rural areas.

That's great for you. Not great for someone else. With my Remy sitting in the "looks pretty but not shooting it" I am down to handguns. So, the Springer loaded is the primary "go to" for myself. Before the crack, the Remy with 7-rds of 2-3/4" 00 was the go to. I'm no less comfortable with the handgun. In fact, FOR ME I am more comfortable with it because I've been shooting the 1911 platform for 14 years now and it's such a natural feel/reaction for me. But that's FOR ME.
Again, I will NEVER tell someone else that the firearm they choose and are comfortable with is the wrong choice.
neon, I saw and handled one of those double 45's at the big Tulsa show. It was pretty interesting. Tad bit on the heavy side.

If he were making meth he wouldn't be in danger, he would BE the danger.

Werd, if I were cookin' Meth I'd already have a FA BAR.
I don't really hear that much gunfire from my meth-cooking neighbors. Occasional only. More gunfire from the non-meth-cooking ones, actually. And no more FA type gunfire since they busted up the "militia" a few years ago.

You would have been in awe awhile back, some FA stuff, exposions, and about 40 people. 4hr battlezone by the sounds of it. Probably 10-15k rds of ammo went down range.
