It hasn't been a problem around here, but stealing condensers is a pretty common thing. They bring money and since almost everyone has insurance, thieves think its a victimless crime.

Well, he is the president so he gets blamed for anything that goes wrong, even stolen AC units.

Where do you live, stereotypical everybody happy suburbia?
Suburbia? Hell no. Canada Eh!

For the purposes of this discussion the two are more or less the same. Places full of people with no real problems. In the USA anywhere cops have things better to do(IE not cities or the methed out countryside), scrap theft is huge.

I like how this thread is 1/3 flounder, 1/3 jokes, and 1/3 totally serious advice on securing a heat pump.

some combination of electric fence, those speakers that put out a 150db noise, strobe lights, a game camera, and explosive ink packets would seem to be enough to stop all but the most dedicated thieves.. at the very least, it makes them work as hard as they would have to at a real job...

WTF is a Heat Pump??? Looks Kind of like a central air conditioning unit to me.. Maybe it is just a regional lingo difference..

In reply to drsmooth:

IIRC, In climates that don't get very cold, but cold enough to need some heat occasionally, they'll run the AC unit backwards to heat the house. At which point its called a heat pump, it pumps heat both ways.

Air conditioner = cold air in the summer.

Heat Pump = cold air in the summer and hot air in the winter.

My house was a foreclosure in a pretty decent 'hood. The A/C unit got busted open and the coils yanked out, according to the neighbors it's the only one ever stolen. Just my luck. Anyway, mine is on a very visible side of the house. According to code you MUST have a disconnect outside the house so it can be turned off for servicing, the thieves flipped the cover open and turned off the breakers. So when I replaced the unit and the outside disconnect box I put a nice shiny lock on the box. If they want to risk electrocution, well they are welcome to try. I keep hoping I'll find some shiny happy person with his hand burned off walking down the street twitching.

Unfortunately, bolt cutters are cheap, and they probably carry them already for that sort of thing.

Bury that pneumatic mole impaler (from a recent thread) in the ground aimed up w/ a proximity or pressure pad switch to actuate.
